it was always an enigmatic cover to me, until i learned of its story. now that i know the circumstances by which it was taken, i appreciate it very much. it is an insult to be on that web site and if i could post a reply to the person on it who said it had complex symbolism, i would tell them they are right on the money.

i was taken aback when it first came out, the cover was basically almost poorly done, but the story makes it almost seem like the cover comes to life, the story, the cover, the picture, it all comes together to make you understand that its just not an album cover, its something else all together

the picture in itself is interesting, regardless of the backstory imo.

i thought i rememberd seeing the cover without the orange box somewhere? a black & white photocopy was used as the cover for the lp also, some websites used the color image of the cover for advertisements, etc. without covering his crotch, but the image was very small, and the cd was never released without the square

can someone tell me the story of the album cover? i would love to know what its about. ok, i finally found the old interview on pitchfork when he explained this... it's on the second page: www.pitchforkmedia.com/interviews/x/xiu-xiu-03/it's old, and the formatting may be off a bit, but it worked for me... if it doesn't work, let me know, and i'll copy that section

Thanks for the interview. I've heard so many different stories since i've been listening to Xiu Xiu. Some of them wild, some of them likely considering the album art. When I saw Xiu Xiu in early 2004 a girl told me that the man was Jamie's boyfriend and had accompanied him to Vietnam because Jamie was tired of traveling alone. I knew how much Jamie liked to travel so the story sounded reasonable enough to believe. Then after the numerous posts about how the story makes the cover and the album so much better I couldn't understand what was so great about it. Now I can.
