yes it is a mexican bass type guitar its called a guitarron it's not a guitaron proper. i'm not sure what it you would actually call it. it appears to be a hybrid of a guitarron and an electric bass having 4 strings (most traditonal guitarrons have 6), a fender jazz bass pickup in the soundhole with the electronics (wiring, volume and tone knobs) in the tailpiece, and standard electric bass strings (i think; i haven't changed the strings in the 5 years that i have owned it). it was most certainly handmade by someone who is not yet a master luthier, which i think makes it more beautiful and individual. i acquired it after don dias (from ten in the swear jar) told me he saw it for sale at a consignment shop in san jose. i went and looked at it about 483 times trying to figure out how i could afford it. when i finally decided that i would bite the bullet and just eat a little less for a while so i could buy it, the consignment shop had knocked $150 off of the price. you can hear it (mostly acoustic) on the chapel version of king earth and (electric) i believe on the knifeplay version of don diasco. if it's on anything else, i can't remember at this moment.
