they did not shy from new material. jamie stuck mainly to his wide-ranging supply of guitars, while caralee moved around the stage manipulating a bunch of experimental sound-inducing things including a mic she dipped in a glass full of what looked like pebbles.. and a my little pony doll.

the opener, hives hives, was done on small string instruments. it sounded beautiful, and slightly incongruous until the lyrics kicked in, strangely it worked.

similarly, many old faves were brought to life in brand new ways. caralee added some synth distorted hums and hisses to "i broke up" and "don diasco." in "i broke up," jamie's trademark shriek was replaced with a re-worded "THIS IS THE WORST VACATION EVER / IM GOING TO CUT UPEN YOUR ROOFING SHINGLE, WITH A FOREHEAD."

highlights:
- between songs somebody shouted "caralee, sing helsabot, fucking asshole." she laughed and jamie responded with "only caralee's babies can call her a fucking asshole."
- J & C duet for fab muscles
- roadie's birthday, everyone sang him happy bday.

they played to a sell-out crowd very successfully. a setlist with stronger songs may have been smarter, but to some it was a blessing.

there was no encore, strangely. everyone stayed and cheered for a considerably long while before an announcer came on.

anyone who is in a town that xiu xiu is rolling through--i strongly urge you to go.

that show was a great one. i loved how the crowd shushed the loud ones during fabulous muscles.

and yes, only caralee's unborn baby can call her a fucking asshole.

I think hearing hives hives on an autoharp may have been the highlight for me

yes, this show was great, i managed to move my way close up front, and making lots of movement, dancing all about. it was fantastic
