triple j is an australian mainstream alt. radio station for those who don't know.
a friend of mine the other day told me they played I luv the valley oh. I haven't really developed an opinion on this, I don't know whether to laugh about xiu xiu being played alongside eminem, or to be pleased that xiu xiu is becoming more accessible, even if it means they must lower themselves to a quickly passing fad.
no matter how you look at it, it makes you feel used. it makes me feel like xiu xiu want money. a similar situation happened with a band called múm, after being played on triple j, they simply lost all their 'alternative' appeal. the appeal that makes you feel special, for liking something different to everyone else. to find that boppers fell in love with múm, and called it 'good music to go to sleep to', i can only see xiu xiu heading down a similar track. "have you heard that new gay band, where the singer pretends about killing himself all the time? it's sooo funny!!!"
the certain appeal is falling away very fast, xiu xiu are losing their genuineness, all over possibly one persons choice to expose them on the biggest, most well known radio station in all of australia.
but maybe i'm just taking this the wrong way, maybe this is a wake up call to tell me that xiu xiu are not for me. or maybe xiu xiu or whoever decided to allow their music to be played on jjj simply had no idea what a disgusting, low, fashion based radio station it is.

They play Eminem on JJJ? That's news to me.
As for Xiu Xiu now being played on JJJ well, I'm all for it since it increases the chance of a tour here. My main beef with JJJ is their constant promotion of crap Australian hip-hop.
At least JJJ doesn't have ad breaks.

triple j were the only station in australia that played eminem. they were also the first to play his music, he was everyone's favourite for a few days, until jjj realized what sort of fans he was associated with. it'd be rare to hear him on there now days, but I have heard d12 on there recently.
and yeah, triple j could be worse, i must admit. but I suppose without a mainstream alt. audience, the proposed tour to aus would end up being a loss. but I suppose we can forget our chances of having a nice tour. I would not bother to attend, knowing how people would talk all through the show, and the kind of crowd that would turn up.
mmhm, if xiu xiu are reading, could I mayhap propose a private show if the tour goes ahead? i'd pay $100 a ticket to be able to enjoy a live performance without crowd talk, and maybe couches....just a suggestion/dream.

arent there tentative plans for a february 05 tour?
that would be tops. except i turn 18 on the 20th, so it would have to be late feb. i hope they play sydney on the 20th, thatd be a nice birthday. 1 in 28 chance...
i heard i luv the valley oh! on jjj. i liked this, because it was my alarm clock and it was a nice way to wake up. the album has a release here now, jjj airplay is kinda expected. no need to feel elitist about it until they start being really mainstream.

Hm, I had heard that I Luv The Valley OH! was being played on Triple J by a friend. It didn't really bother me that much, i guess it's good that they are finally recieving some attention. But with that attention you will undoubtably get some real retards. I used to listen to Triple J constantly a few years ago, but they started changing a lot of their playlists to more rap/hip-hop/soul and i soon stopped listening. Only recently have i started listening again and they have improved greatly. Take a look at their hitlist: www.abc.net.au/triplej/music/hitlist_artist.htm It isn't too bad, but Xiu Xiu isn't on it. One thing i liked about Triple J is the fact that even if they do play music from a well known band they won't always play the single, and have features album playing many of the tracks. For example, Modest Mouse - The View, instead of Float On. PLus they play Les Savy Fav and Devendra Banhart (whose playing at a fucking over 18 concert ). I know what you mean by Xiu Xiu not feeling as special, but i guess that's something you'll need to deal with yourself, it can only be a good thing for the band if they become increasingly popular. Although it feels like a worse thing for the fans. And i, like you, also dread that Xiu Xiu become a fad. I still go to school ( ) and i can imagine some people from my school taking them purely as a novelty act, from just hearing the one song from Triple J. But i guess that's the way with every band becoming popular. Sorry for the rant, it practically boilt down to, great for the band, annoying to some fans, can't change it, deal with it.

hi this is all news to us and well, kind of funny if you think about it. i can assure that we will make whatever kind of music we feel is true for us to make and if for whatever totally surrealistic reason a mainstream station plays one of our songs then it is pure chance. the label that put out our last record in australia is a tiny, totally independant label run by people who are trying to put out music they care about. i want to stress that what we are hoping to do with music will never be a fad for us.

hi jamie!
i'd just like to add, i dont really see triple j as a mainstream station. not like ausstero mainstream (i guess that would be alike clear channel in the US, but less evil)... its a goverment funded youth station, and plays less mainstream stuff.. it wasnt a huge shock to hear xiu xiu.

geez, just cos xiu xiu are being played on triple j doesn't mean the end of their alternative-ness, just because they're being played doesn't mean people are even liking them. My mum heard them and told me about it, and I'm kinda excited about it, I really don't think xiu xiu are about to be embraced ironically and even if they are, it's not gonna last. Besides, Jamie's been saying how the next album's gonna be straying away from the 'poppiness' of Fabulous Muscles, which means much more chaos. So yeah, I'm not worried, have a little faith besides, Triple J is more alternative than you're giving it credit for. Sure it's popular, but it's definitely not commercial, they play shit music yes, but they also balance it with good music. It's pretty much the only place you can hear somewhat interesting music, even if you have to endure their stupid conversations and crappy music sometimes. So yeah. And FBI is shit

i didn't say triple j were a mainstream station, or an alternative station. I said they are a mainstream alternative station.
i've got no problem with anyone who likes xiu xiu for what they are, i was just trying to say what a burden this has become for the possible february aus tour. but i suppose regardless of radio play, it only takes one person to ruin a show, and that would simply be a given in australia.
isn't anyone else a little worried/upset as to what it will be like if it goes ahead?
considering the rare experience it would/will be, and the expense it will cost me, i wish there was something we could do to make it 'safe'.

Yeah I feel stupid replying to this thread (no offence). It's not something we can change, and it's not really that important anyway. I can never express what I am trying to say.

well of course xiu xiu being played on triple j doesn't mean the end of the world, but it got me thinking about how much of a let down the aus tour may become.
and i'm sure it's pretty obvious how much it would mean to me.

i never really thought xiu xiu getting mainstream attention would ever be an issue, but i would also feel ambiguous about it...
for example, i've loved modest mouse for years... i only got to see them once before they were being played on kroq, and it was a great show... however, i went to a show on their last tour, after they had mainstream success, and while the band still sounded great, the little KROQ kids next to me in limp biscuit and POD shirts were annoying as fuck.. yes, modest mouse deserve to finally get some attention/success for the work they've created, but for those people who wanted to see the band perform their music, rather than just their hit single, it was a little depressing
