Posted this in my livejournal (don't laugh at me):
The Xiu Xiu show was yesterday, Rob and I got there at a good time, we drank some coronas and then Silentist came on. The crowd looked really young, they were out on a school night! This Silentist "band" was one guy was, it not my cup of tea, it was like a mixture of hardcore punk guitars with a piano, he didn't really sing he would shout things as if from a catacomb (that was a cool effect). The only word I heard was "razorblade."
Jamie and his girlfriend set up the equipment all the while Jamie did his patented "you're not really here" thing with the audience. The last time I saw them it was at Cafe du Nord and while he was no longer doing the purely acoustic thing he was not yet doing what he was doing before his instruments were stolen. At Cafe du Nord he had an electric guitar, well, this show had two harmoniums and his electric guitar along with a synth, gongs, the little egg-shaped vibrator things and who knows what else. The venue was a small room, probably 100 people or a bit less. While I appreciated the sound of the past i can't get over how intimate his acoustic shows were, his voice and the lyrics played a central role. This night however, I did not think Xiu Xiu was as tight, I loved the show but I felt the sound drowned his voice. This could merely be an acoustics problem, i was dangerously close to the stage and the speakers.
The best part about the show was was the setlist, this is in no particular order and might not be complete:
Crank Heart
Suha
I Luv the Valley
Fabulous Muscles
10,000 X a minute
Poe Poe
Rose of Sharon
Clowne Towne
Helsabot (his girlfriend sang this one)
So he played two of my favorite songs, Poe Poe and Clowne Towne, I didn't think he would ever play Poe Poe again.
