does anyone here happen to know the story behind this beautiful song? i love it to death and am just a bit curious as to the story behind it, i'm guessing someone jamie or another bandmate was close to had aids, though this is of course speculation. any sort of ideas or factual information is welcomed and appreciated

after i first heard this song, i became obsessed with it, but could find nothing on it online. eventually, i developed a performance art piece based on the song for a dance class i was taking- not that that makes me any kind of expert on it, but i did develop a very personal relationship to the song... i felt that the song was perhaps a study of how he would feel IF he had contracted hiv, but more interesting, the song seemingly attacks the audience by making them confront the emotional storm he is going through. "i cannot wait to die, can't you tell can't you tell can't you tell?". of course, now that i'm more fully immersed in xiu xiu's music, a great deal of these songs have a similar confrontational quality, but somehow, i always feel like "hives hives" is almost pointing blame at the audience themselves, although i can't necessarily quote a line in the song that gives me that impression... so, yeah... i don't know any real background, but those are some of my thoughts

certainly a possibility, and i do agree with the wonderfully confrontational aspect not only to this song but numerous other xiu xiu songs as well. jamie uses "chi cha" and "cha chi" in this song both as ambiguous pronouns which could possibly lead the listener to think as though he's talking to them. and i agree that it's likely his interpretation of someone with AIDS experience after diagnosis and whatnot, i just wasn't sure to the extent of the personal impact the disease has had on jamie (and moreso hadn't quite been able to put together a complete idea of this aids experience theory in my head)

In SkyScraper Magazine Issue #15 (which I bought off Interpunk.com if you're looking for a copy) Jamie says the song is about when he was an intern in an AIDS clinic. The song focuses on two things:
1. A patient he was close to and became friends with died of AIDS
2. At the time he thought he may have been HIV positive, although later tests showed he was not.
I love this song and find it incredibly powerful and moving, and also somewhat...I dunno "shivering?" Just the ramifications of this disease.
AIDS medical research, definetely a good cause to support!

Greg Saunier of Deerhoof/Curtains/Nervous Cop/etc. fame did the awesome drums for that track.

i grew up just down the street from a stadium for a cal state school. and so, many nights, i would fall asleep to the distant sounds of the marching band - especially the drums. those weird, post-martial marching band drums.
i now secretly love marching bands, and especially the drum parts.
and that's sort of what the drums in this song remind me of.
