It makes a huge difference skuldchan! With atonal pieces it's all about the arrangement, I think. I'd like to think more actively on it after this discussion. I also just experience synesthesia far less / nearly not at all at live shows, though. My brain shuts it down for functionality's sake, since it's a symptom of my broader sensory processing disorder. I mean, of all my autism symptoms, vivid synestheisa is definitely the one that makes me the most interesting to talk to at parties. How about yourself?? I am curious to hear your experience with it!
Cat you are a god for posting all those clips and for maintaining that twitter. The new LTOHS sounds awesome-- I know that a lot of the highest-intensity songs were cut for this tour, so it's super cool to see that the liveliest moments of the new set still go hard. And huge "congrats" and good luck in your PhD presentation!
@owen, if you are reading (I realize it's been a long post lol): a bit apropros of nothing, but this reminds me. Did you make an active choice to stop screaming in your songs? Would you ever consider write songs with screaming again, or do you consider it a permanent departure?

I’ve posted a clip of each song on twitter at @worldwideoweb (I tried to do it as a thread but it took so long to post that it kept splitting it up so you can find them if you go on the profile). Lovely videos, thank you so much, Cat! I am super bummed that my wife and I will not be able to make the Hamburg show next year, it's the same day as a conference she has to attend for work! You'll have to let us know how it goes, I hope it gets recorded like the Reeperbahn Festival show. I will have to wait until the actual tour for Island to see Owen again. *sad face* Good luck with your PhD viva, Cat! Let us know when we will be calling you "Doctor Cat." It makes a huge difference skuldchan! With atonal pieces it's all about the arrangement, I think. ... How about yourself?? I am curious to hear your experience with it! Instrumentation makes a big difference to me too, though changes happen regardless of the key signature of the song. "The Great Elsewhere" when performed live has fewer colors than it does on the album, probably due to the lack of the other sounds and the orchestra, and the colors shift less for me than the album version as well as the song progresses. "The Riverbed" has been really different for me between the album (where it's red-black), when Owen has Rob and Matt on tour (red-yellow-white), and when it's the newer, slower arrangement I first heard from the Reeperbahn Festival recording (desaturated purple and gray). The presence of Owen's voice also makes a difference to me somehow, even when the instrumentation is the same, and I can't really explain it. The version of "The Great Elsewhere" with Shara Worden/Nova's vocals is mainly black-grey-gold, despite the song being mainly green-white and then red-blue-yellow when Owen sings it. ...I think my brain just thinks it sounds completely different without Owen? My synesthesia is also more...I dunno how to describe it...easier to ignore at a live concert than not? I wouldn't say that my brain shuts it down, because the colors are still there and I still feel the colors there, but I think that because there is something else for me to pay attention to, it's less intrusive? I'm wondering, eamas, if you've noticed a preference between your favorite Owen songs and the colors you see in them? Like, if there are certain colors that you like, do you gravitate toward those songs more than others? I have definitely noticed that I favor Owen's songs that have richer, deeper colors over the ones that are more monochrome or whose colors are less saturated for me. Do you do this too?

Worth mentioning that Owen did two interviews recently that I hope are OK to share here: x x
I'm only partway through the Kreative Kontrol interview, but I thought the Chosen Family interview was one of my favorites I've ever heard from Owen. I love the discussion of music as a product, of composing as work. I think describing musicians' labor as "cathartic" or "confessional", treating composition like diary-writing, can sort of detract from the fact that music is... a job! It's work, and workers deserve protections-- both in the economic sense, and vis a vis the right for an artist to be as "confessional" or opaque about their personal life as they choose. Owen, just know that your audience's appreciation for you is not predicated by your accessibility-- it's not something we're entitled to. We're just happy for the burgers. (Edit to add-- I felt like it went w/o saying that your openness, like in both of those interviews, is so gracious when you choose to give it. Not an expectation, but meaningful and resonant and real. Thank you for that, quite genuinely, and well wishes always.) Also I think the idea of music-as-work is very positive for the community of listeners. It removes the performer at least to an extent from the pedestal of idoldom, and as such enables listeners to interact in a more genuine way, not quite so defined by traditional "fandom". I feel like this must be a pretty intentional choice by Owen? (Heartland's narrative feels related?) Anyway, it works, and comes across, imo. Skuldchan, regarding synesthesia, that's so cool! I also relate to a lot of what you said-- it sounds similar to my experience, and well-articulated. I have a REALLY hard time picking favorites, but I tend to listen less frequently to songs that are browns/blacks/grays in color. I tend to like songs with tumbling cascades of chords, like the rapid plucking in Midnight Directives, or the keyboard in The Great Elsewhere and Infernal Fantasy. Since my synesthesia is so pitch-based, the piano riffs for all of those songs are like... a really vivid, multicolored bead curtain.

As an aside--@owen
Eager for the new record as we are, I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say we're glad you're prioritizing your mental health over everything else, and we hope whatever treatment you're getting is as effective as it can be.

Happy (almost) Holidays, everyone! The end of the year (and decade?!) draws close. I eagerly await those remasters/rereleases that could come out any day now.... Anyways, there's an acoustic session with Radio FM4 of a few Island songs that was posted recently. It's absolutely gorgeous! Hearing Paragon of Order and Perseverance of the Saints with piano accompaniment is giving me life.

Thank you so much for the full-length uploads! I had seen the new Lewis/Shirt video on Twitter and was disappointed Twitter cut it off right before the epic return of the strings at the end And as usual, all new live versions of the songs sound fantastic. I'm especially digging Perseverance of the Saints. And congratulations on becoming Dr. Cat! A PhD is no easy feat, you should be proud.

It's really hard to choose a favourite because they're all so beautiful, but I think it has to be Polar Vortex <3 Thank you!

Not sure where else to post this in the forum, but I drew some long overdue fanart for the Heartland album today. I've drawn little things here and there but nothing major. Figured you guys might get a kick out of it ( click here for the full image, i shrunk it so the large file size didn't take over the board):
