i think a lot of people on this board would really dig silver apples if they haven't heard them yet. i just discovered them the other day and they blew my mind. they're a synth/drums duo from the 60's who sing fairly melodic songs over hypnotic beats and oscillator drones, and i'm sure they're a big influence over jamie & co.
you can get both of their 60s lp's on one cd. definitely worth checking out if you're into xiu xiu, which i'm sure anyone reading this post is.

From allmusic.com:
On November 1, 1998, the Silver Apples' van crashed while returning from a New York gig; the accident left Simeon with a broken neck and spinal injuries, casting his continued musical career in grave doubt.
Fabulous Muscles lyrics:
wigging out before the unfamiliar flesh of my broken kneck
My thoughts:
This is obviously a conspiracy involving the President of France and Fender Guitars. Expect to see large scale invasions of US coastal states followed by unprecedented movements of the Juan de Fuca plate leading to a decrease in North American land area by 14%.

sloop john b:

i broke up:

ACK! pet sounds is one of my most hated albums of all time. I'm sorry but cheasy love songs and jocky surf rock doesn't qualify itsef as anything but the teeny bopper aingst driven drivel that every 20 something in a small apartment complaining about his sexual problems can produce.
I hate..hate...hate the beach boys . have ever since I was a little kid listening to the radio. and the fact that so many people want to tell me the pet sounds is brilliant only serves to worry me about the influences that shitty critics can have on the minds of the youth. FIGHT BACK! TAKE ART INTO YOUR OWN HANDS! DON'T ACCEPT DRIVEL AS ART!. Seriously take a good hard listen to that stuff...the lyrics are horrid (if they are good it's when the beach boys didn't wirte them) and the music is boring to the point of maddness.
ARGH!!!

is pet sounds worth purchasing? what is so good about it? isn't it pretty influencial? Yes, for starters. God only knows why or whatever it goes by is a good song to get drunk to.

I'm sitting here trying to figure out what 'jocky'-ness someone could possibly infer from listening to Pet Sounds...

to clarify when I think of cali surf rock I think of high school assholes who were pre beachboys all into lettterman jackets, and post beachboys all into ... letterman jackets. and dressing nice for their grandmas.
I don't know I just hate the damn band...everything about them is slightly inane, dull, vaguely trtite, and the loves ongs are some of the worst ever writen. but that's just one mans opinion.

Agreed. The Beach Boys suck. Anyone who derives pleasure from listening to them may have no taste whatsoever. It's some of the most offensive music ever made anywhere. But then, can you really count most sixties music in any discussion of interesting music anyway? Outside of the Velvet Underground, the Stooges and maybe Dylan, not much came out of the Sixties. You can maybe argue the Beatles, but if you're interested in good music, please leave the Beach Boys out of the discussion or else you have to acknowledge the Monkeys, the Back Street Boys and the New Kids on the Block.

i have to take serious exception to mr. anonymous guest. the only good things to come from the sixties are the velvets, the stooges, (maybe) dylan, and (maybe) the beatles? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? what about the kinks? the who? the stones? the zombies? nick drake? love? donovan? the pretty things? early pink floyd? frank zappa? captain beefheart? hendrix? everyone who has ever appeared on nuggets compilation? (i could go on.) again, ARE YOU KIDDING ME? (surely you at least like the MC5?)
also, it's fine you don't like the beach boys. but it isn't fine that you feel the need to indirectly insult anyone and everyone who does.

on a lighter note...I'm very impressed with the silver apples...like a good herzog film, the storys about making the music is almost as good as the music itself. which says alot for what they are doing.
