i've been reading up on this guy a little bit and it's incredibly interesting. so much of what he says are things that you might understand already but they've been articulated in such a profound way that hit you right in your brainballs.
his idea of the shadow of the conscious that's like an automatically created counterbalance to how you perceive yourself.
for example: you see a certain strong negative characteristic in the people around you because you haven't dealt with that specific thing in your own personality. like puritan-type people who hate evil so much because of how much they consider themselves good. "The shadow is not necessarily good or bad. It simply counterbalances some of the one-sided dimensions of our personality. Jung emphasized the importance of being aware of shadow material and incorporating it into conscious awareness. Otherwise we project these attributes onto others."
his most famous theory i think is of the collective subconscious, how all people everywhere have a basic subconscious understanding of certain symbolic themes. he said it was like DNA of the human psyche which is really fascinating to think about.
the idea of introverts and extroverts come from him as well i think. the extrovert finding meaning outside the self, whereas the introvert finds meaning within the self.
i haven't read any of his books yet but the little tidbits of understanding about his work are pretty stimulating just in themselves.
