okay
so last night was the return of XIU XIU, one of the greatest band to grace the city of vancouver in a loooonnnggg time (or about 2 months since the last time they were here) and fuck me they put on a show.
the evening started with me arriving super early at the brickyard, because i didnt want to wait in a line to get into the show (unlike last time, yeesh!). lo and behold, no-one was there except a few barflies.
(count- 4 people)i sat in a corner and read this zine i picked up called infiltration about these guys in toronto (hi stu!!!!!) who basically infiltrate buildings where security is high and take pictures and find easy ways of getting into buildings so that others may explore....
i read the zine, and waited for the SLEW of people to show up. nothing. i had a beer, it was delicious. finally after about an hour and a half of waiting around the first band set up and played to a crowd of
(count-15) people. horrible! the band that is. man, nothing worse than yucky punk rock. i believe the name of the group was the advance somethings....i know that there was a member of the nons in that group and hahaha that reminds me of a story, but ill save it for later.
next up! THE NEW YEARS RESOLUTION. ahhhhh yes. they were more of a band that suited the mood of the evening. playing their brand of post-rock settled my upset stomach from the other band and it was good! (more people showed up too!!! about 5 more bringing the total to 20! GO VANCOUVER!)
after waiting for the new years resolution to pack everything, jamie and cara-lee started unpack all of their gear onto the stage, and i was relieved to know that the evening of excellent music would begin!
XIU XIU started the set off with the beautiful song where jamie plays his little harp( sorry guys, i dont know the name of it) with such intensity, that i thought at one point a bunch of strings would be break off and fly into my face. luckily they didnt and all was well.
(people count=30)
they continued with their beautiful sounds playing such great as "i broke up" "i love the valley OH!" and "clowne town" as well as a slew of songs from all albums. in between songs the drunken crowd would talk about fucking eachother and having threesomes and just general stupid rude things to talk about during and inbetween songs, that i had secretly hoped that jamie would somehow tell them to shut-up like the last time he knocked some sense into a heckling body, and he did! just at the peak of drunken talk, XIU XIU played "shut-up shut-up" (correct me if im wrong) and well, it shut the crowd up. i laughed to myself and thought "jamie! thank you for telling them to shut up in song!" the end of the evening came as cara-lee stepped away from her structure of instruments to sing "helsabot" and was a great way to end the night.
we ( my girlfriend and i ) caught a cab towards our car and luckily, wasnt broken into like the last time we saw xiu xiu play. it was truly a better show than i could have ever hoped for and i thank jamie and cara-lee for making it happen.
jason!!!
