Who is "they"? Usually if you ask the soundman nicely if you can use a line out from the board they'll let you. I've taped Xiu Xiu this way once with a MD walkman and it sounded terrific.

I taped Xiu Xiu from the soundboard at the North Star in Philly last week. I asked the guy running the board, but he said I would have to get permission from the band. We then asked Jamie, and he said its fine, to quote Jamie "I hope it sounds good" Contact me once you've taped, we can trade. I taped using both my mics and soundboard, both copies sound excellent. mywebpages.comcast.net/tquinto/trade.html

any advice on what kind of wires i would need? It depends on the soundboard at the venue. For the show I taped, their soundboard had RCA left and right outputs, so I needed an RCA > 1/8" inch cable. Other venues use XLR cables, 1/4" cables, 1/8", etc. Just bring a backpack full of all different kinds and you should be ok.
