I'm sorry if that has been asked before but i finally recieved my vinyl copy of xiu xiu - a promise yesterday and saw that the name (i guess it's a name because it is written in katakana) da-ri-a-n/su (on japanese) is scratched on it who does it stand for?

oh yes if you want to check out if it scratched into you copy as well here :
ダリアソ
you browser must be compatible with japanese characters to display it properly.
oh and i meant "Da-ri-a-n/so" not su the n and so are quite similar and hard to distinguish on my copy....

to give this post an right to exist i might add that it could be pronounced "dalian" or "dalias(o)" as well.

I just checked my copy of the first pressing of this and it has the same etching.
My guess is that it would be read as Darien (¥À¥ê¥¢¥ó). Although still no clue what it would be about.
Not sure if the katakana showed up. My browser has a problem posting Japanese to things sometimes. If not, it was just the same thing you posted with "n" at the end instead of "so"

Actually the last character does look more like "so" than "n". Oh well.

an online translator reads it (taken from the japanese characters saiken posted) as: The dahlia Soviet Union
but then again, that's just what it gives me... could mean something else...

As I said it's probably a name because Katakana are only used for names or english terms so you can't simply translate it.... But thank you for contributing anyway
