What are Xiu Xiu's musical influences? Because, I don't hear any influences in any of Stewart's songs. To me they seem to lack anything that resembles any other band past or present. Maybe I'm wrong. ?

Sorry, I wasn't really looking for what he sounded like, but rather his music style & the sound structure etc. But since you brought that up, I think Stewart's singing sounds like Robert Smith with a sore throat.

I would nominate Suicide and The Smiths as influences.

i think they sound very similar to the band "talk talk". but i think most people already compare them to each other.

well, there are four covers that xiuxiu/ jamie have done, which is probably a good indication of influence. we have joy division, smiths, the pixies, and the woman who sings "fast car", whose name i am going completely blank on for the moment oh, and in a conversation at a show once, he said he really liked deerhoof

Xiu Xiu and Deerhoof seem more like mutually influential contemporaries Youre thinking of tracy chapman dr strangelove Oh and what pixies song did they cover? ? im dying to know (its interesting to note in that pitchfork article that jamie cites kim deal but not frank black...)

whoever said Suicide is totally right.. I'd never heard of this band before, but when I first heard Frankie Teardrop I was shocked into silence like I thought only Xiu Xiu could... yeah... every Xiu Xiu fan should hear them... or at least that song.

Another Suicide song Xiu Xiu fans should check out is Super Subway Comedian. Frankie Teardrops is their signature tune though.

i agree, xiu xiu and deerhoof are contempories, but he did list the lead singer in that pitchfork list as well and you're right, it was tracy chapman, thank you as for the cover of "gigantic", it was on a website somewhere, but i can't find the link right now... if you catch me on aim, i can send it to you. it's not a live track... i believe it was a studio recording for an album of covers that some guy put together... the band name, rather than xiu xiu, was something like "the only guy in the band who wants to fuck kim deal" aim: dr strangelove j Xiu Xiu and Deerhoof seem more like mutually influential contemporaries Youre thinking of tracy chapman dr strangelove Oh and what pixies song did they cover? ? im dying to know (its interesting to note in that pitchfork article that jamie cites kim deal but not frank black...)
