sooooooooooo
the vancouver show was amazing. i had never seen xiu xiu before, but my good friend and ex-roomate stu hood always ranted and raved about them, so i knew that the next time xiu xiu came to vancouver i had to go! within time i had purchased/downloaded xiu xiu albums and familarized myself with songs and became a huge fan ( dont worry, this will come into play later)
my girlfriend and i got the brickyard in vancouver and were the first ones there... we had a few beers, i met and talked with jamie ( nice guy! ) and made my way back to my seat where i met up with a few friends. the first 3 bands that opened got the idea that if they played long enough, people would like them. but this is not the case. the first band (the basement sweets) was horribly boring. bad 80's rip-off music. heckling insued and the heckle bug caught me and i too started to heckle... they finished with a ten minute song and that was that.
between set changes a few funny things had happened to my girlfriend and i... including one guy threatining to kick my girlfriend's ass...he even smashed a bottle...
the next band ( they shoot horses dont they?) sounded like need new body... it was okay, but a little toooooo circus like for my tastes.
after that was a band called fond of tigers. i think there is one review of that band that summed it up. "pssssssshttttt, ive already seen do make say think"
FINALLY at around 2:00am xiu xiu came and by then my girlfriend and i were dead fucking tired... BUT jamie and his fine young associate came on the stage and started to play! HEAVEN!!! PURE HEAVEN!!!! i have never seen something sooo emotional in my entire life. the highlight of the evening (besides the songs) was when someone shouted out " GET A REAL SYNTH PLAYER! " jamie leaned into his microphone and shouted " if you said what i think you just said, then you can fucking go fuck your fucking baby cousin!" and that was that...
by the end of the 7th song, my girlfriend was asleep and i was getting tired as well, so we trekked up the hill to the parkade to get the the car. but, something was different about. a window was broken. smashed, gone. we looked inside the car, and all of our stuff was taken. approximately 250 cds were gone, new shoes that we had boughten were gone, jackets were gone, everything was just gone. my girlfriend was freaking out and crying and yelling and screaming... i was upset too... half of my cd collection was gone. including all of my xiu xiu cds and the new polyphonic spree album that i had just bought....
very upsetting.....
but somehow worth it.
the drive home was a bit stressful, but i will always remember seeing xiu xiu play in vancouver/the night everything thing was stolen....
thanks for playing vancouver, and i can't wait to see you play again.
