yeah, i don't understand the whole "indiefucks" thing... it's really funny because it's like you're trying to be too indie for indie music, which is pretty fucking ridiculous and pretentious. i read about a promise on pitchfork, played it on my radio show and ended up buying fabulous muscles. now it's one of my favorite albums of all time because it connected with me in a way no album has in a really long time... probably since kid a (oh no! radiohead is too indie! i mean, too mainstream!).
i think xiu xiu is going to be historic and massively influential in retrospect, but i doubt they'll get their due anytime soon. they'll be a lot like joy division, without the untimely death.

Well I don't know anything about this "indie rock" scene. I've never heard anything associated with it that I've liked until Xiu Xiu. I saw Patrick Wolf mentioned on this board somewhere and checked that out too, and I really like his Lycanthropy album. Where can I find information on Animal Collective? I need some warped, fucked up industrial cabaret-ish music, too. Dr. Strangelove, I know you know what I'm talking about - Veinen

fucked up industrial/cabaret shit... hmm well, the new skinny puppy is pretty interesting, although it's more techno than cabaret... the dresden dolls are cabaret in the traditional sense of the word... "cabaret gothic punk" to use their own title... pretty interesting, fun and dark... and possibly the most interesting eyebrows in the history of plucked eyebrows... i've avoided the goth clubs lately and my new music tastes generally coincide with the more "indie" friendly stuff... like, i'm really into the new destroyer album at the moment, as well as the new magnetic fields, deerhoof, and hidden cameras... as for older stuff i've been listening to, i've gained a strange fascination with the pogues in the last month or two, and the homosexuals have been on in the car a lot (so good... so happy they re-released that album)... joy division, christian death, and death in june have been heard blasting from my car stereo... oh, and the new echo and the bunnymen re-issues sound so good compared to the shitty old tapes i grew up on

I got into Xiu Xiu thru Fabulous Muscles..sorry
Anyway, i was flipping through oc weekly and was perusing the Ameoba Music ad and saw fabulous muscles called art-punk...basically, without ever hearing them i was convinced they'd either be my favorite band or i'd hate their guts. Obviously, it's the former.
As for people at my ~4500 student school, there are only two other people who are aware of xiu xiu because of themselves for sure. But then again, Poly's in the ghetto, and everyone listens to rap or to shit metal/poseur punk/emo. And people say southern california is some kind of cultural mecca - not where I am, anyway.

well mike, if you're in orange county, you at least have costa mesa, which has a few redeaming values... i'm in the fucking IE... my most common haunt is a gay bar in pomona that still has the same decor from the 70's, and every friday night is gay mexican cowboy night (believe me, they actually exist)... i drive to chino to hang out with friends, so don't complain then again, i probably shouldn't complain... if i didn't live in the IE, i probably would never have seen a group of gay men and lesbians country line dancing... kinda scary, but utterly fascinating... as for xiu xiu being "Art-Punk", i don't think i'd categorize them that way... maybe "post-punk", but i think of "art-punk" as being shit like les savy fav performances and liars cds. maybe i'm wrong you know, looking at the subject line, we have gotten WAY off topic...

Indeed.
I'd say anybody with a functional pair of ears qualifies for a Xiu Xiu listener.

I work two jobs and sometimes it takes awhile for me to have time to post.
Anyway, what I've heard of the new Skinny Puppy album makes my stomach churn. It's even worse than the latest ohGr album, which I thought was utterly horrible compared to the Welt debut (which was pretty great).
I mentioned Dresden Dolls earlier on this thread. I dig Amanda Palmer in the most unlawful way. She's also an excellent lyricist. I sense that she's being embraced by the World Serpent style crowd, and that would be great.

I checked out "Knife Play" 2 summers ago after hearing really good things about it. I was absolutely fucking blown away. I've checked out everything else as it's come out, and I absolutely love Xiu Xiu. I haven't been listening as much lately (it's sunny out!), but they're one of my very favorite bands. The indiefucks are horrible, but I haven't noticed them picking up on Xiu Xiu too much yet. Then again, I kind of avoid that whole scene, and stick to my own little world.
If you want something fucked up, check out the pAper chAse. Their new record "God Bless Your Black Heart" is absolutely wonderful. Not that an album with a song title like "Ready, Willing, Cain and Able" could possibly be bad. Fucked up samples, lots of great guitar hooks, strings, it's wild. Their singer is one of my favorite vocalists.
Also, you guys who are into The Microphones and Neutral Milk Hotel should check out The Robot Ate Me. Their new album, "On Vacation" is outrageous. It's a 2 disc set, CD1 is in the vein of 30s-40s music, and is all about the Holocuast and genocide, CD2 is a wondeful slab of pop about going on a vacation with your lover. Each disc is only like 24 minutes long, but oh god, it's so fucking good. We got it in at the radio station, and I fell completely in love. The band sells it from their website, in handmade packaging with a bonus disc of B-sides. I haven't ordered mine yet, but I plan on doing it soon. It's real good.
