ahh i've debated this with myself many times, it's very hard to pick a single answer however i find that the song that hits me hardest is 'Ian Curtis Wishlist'. 'Dr Troll', while certainly somewhat sad, seems to have almost somewhat of an optimistic edge to it that always hits me strangely; the song has a strange affect on me. other contenders are 'apistat commander', 'sad redox-o-grapher', 'brooklyn dodgers', and jamie's cover of 'asleep'.

i have to vote for "suha", though "dr. troll" and "nieces pieces" are also really sad.

'suha' is the most musically depressing, i think. lyrically it's a whole other story.

So many Xiu Xiu songs are beautifully sad. On Fag Patrol: Asleep, and Nieces Pieces. My friends actually made a short film using the music on fag patrol. Every Christmas my friend James's family goes on vacatition. He sits at home and drinks. So my other friend took that and used it as the story for the film. At the end James takes sleeping pills and dies. I find Xiu Xiu's music to be very cinematic. On one of my other favorite sad songs,Ian Curtis Wishlist,I have the image of Ian's daughter walking through the door and finding him dead. I know the song isn't even really about Ian, but I get those images stuck in my head. I also like Sad Redux, as a sad song. It's sad because its so real. The story of the song is happening every day all around us. Smart girl, or boy, falls in love with asshole jock who does not love her/him back. Thats what I get out of it anyway. I love Xiu Xiu!

1- HIVES HIVES- i remember, when my friend adam died last year (not of AIDS, but an intentional drug overdose- he was a young gay drug dealer stuck in central california), i somehow that song was assigned to the occassion. i got drunk and ripped down all my christmas lights in the room, and then passed out with that song was on repeat, full blast.
2- Apistat Commander- I think this song will resonate more with women than anything. "He'll never come", and he won't.
3- Clowne Towne- this song hit me like a punch right in the center of my chest when i heard it for the first time (which was live in my livingroom). I know he isn't talking about the central valley, but i can identify with it nonetheless. for some people, there is "no exit". see #1.
4- Suha- once again, I think very few songs truely resonate with women's alienation- and this is definately one of them. Even after fulfilling everything that we are told will make us happy- marriage and childbearing- there is a certain loneliness and alienation that is unshakable.
5- Jennifer Lopez (the sweet science version)- having basically grown up in gay bars, and identifying all to well with the pathetic undercurrent of lonliness coupled with the campy tributes to garbage pop culture that echo throughout. night after night, watching the same relentless pursuit of companionship amongst an subversive community which touts anonymous sex and harsh judgements. this song reminds me of morrissey.
but hey, who knows. right?

Jennifer Lopez.
Excuse me---- Is it true what they say About guys who go out by themselves It's that they go home by themselves You've seen me dance here alone before Is it tough to watch, Friday after friday?
Simple, laconic and straight-forward. It's just something that so many people feel day after day. Honestly, there can't be anything sadder than a miserable lonely life, not even death.
I find the lyrics very similar, and probably inspired by The Smiths' "How Soon is Now:"
"There's a club, if you'd like to go You could meet somebody Who really loves you So you go and you stand on your own And you leave on your own And you go home and you cry and you want to die"

''I luv the valley OH''is breaking my heart. I see a guy who is trying to run away from his problems but the more he tries the more hysterical and crazy he becomes, because he can't But actually, I'm not sure what the song is about. English is not my first language, but probably that is not the only reason. I luv the Xiu Xiu OH!

Yeah, this is extremely intense, and has an equally intense musical backing.
Jamie Stewart has succeeded in really codifying family/romantic relationship fears and creating a body of work based on what it's like to be on the receiving end of someone else's bag of learned behaviors. There is no 'posing' either, you can tell that the lyrics and music are the genuine articles of disillusionment and sadness.
More later because I'm really tired right now.

i think "suha" and "brooklyn dogers" take the cake lyrically.
reading how everyone interprets each song is interesting because i dont agree with most of what people here are saying .
dr. troll is deffinitely not a sad song.
