as of right now there is no xiu xiu show confirmed for los angeles. the smell has not reopened. the show that was going to be at the smell was going to be another one of those neon hates you shows (www.neonhatesyou.tk) anyways, and xiu xiu is not playing that. who knows? I don't.

I tried emailing Julie over at Musical Adventures to no avail. I'm afraid even if they do book a show on Saturday I will be unable to make it. And I was looking forward to hearing the acoustic versions of these songs.

so last night, my lame ass decided that i didn't want to miss the show, and according to the devendra banhart site, the show had been confirmed, so i drove down to l.a. and tried to find the smell, which is off an alley in perhaps the worst area of l.a.
during my little hunt for the non-existent xiu xiu show, i: -was offered crack, crystal meth, pcp, and marijuana -was propositioned by a prostitute -was asked if i knew where to find a prostitute -paid a crack addict $4.20 to lead me to a currently defunct venue -paid for parking -discussed the defunct venue with a car full of indie kids and a homeless person who may have been schizophrenic while a car full of goths listened to our conversation from the safety of their car down the alley -and last not but certainly not least, hung out and smoked a cigarette with hippies who i thought were gathered for devendra benhart but were actually attending a wedding reception, which i unwittingly attended myself
so, my night pretty much sucked... anyone else brave the hell that surrounds the smell?

Its amazing how often we forget how freakish LA (the city) really is--seeing it as little as we do from the outskirts.

I like it when people just act like animals instead of being as complicated and complex as they sometimes seem to make me believe. So much quieter.

I didn't brave The Smell that night, but I have braved it many times in the past. Your experiences sound pretty accurate. I love the fact that The Smell actually smells (badly at that).
I'm just wondering when it will open up again. I've gone to some pretty kick-ass shows there. *sighs*

I didn't brave The Smell that night, but I have braved it many times in the past. Your experiences sound pretty accurate. i went to a friend's house afterwards still wearing the same outfit my skinny white ass wore to the non-show, and she looked at my velvet shirt (with slits up the side) that i walked around in and she asked, "how are you still alive?"... my retort: "i had some crack addict leading me to an alley... everyone must have thought i was already taken"... i mean, i grew up in a pretty tough neighborhood, and i've visited areas that make gangbangers flinch, but that shit was outrageous... note for anyone going to a show at the smell in the future: don't go alone, and if you do, do NOT get lost
