for school i have to write an essay on the general topic of censorship...
my thesis is that in a free society, offensive material will always be around, and categorically banning specific content would ultimately violate the rights of free expression. Since a universally accepted set of standards is an impossibility under conflicting opinions of individual standards, solutions of self-censorship and guidance are a rightly enforced regulation.
and that.. . Since governing bodies of the media have the responsibility to respect the requests and complaints of the concerned public, anything widely and publicly distributed has to indeed be subject to forms censorship and regulation.
any thoughts or ideas as to what i could expand on?.. or maybe some opposing thoughts to my argument
thanks

my world issues teacher told me that the age of consent in canada is 14 and the UN is not happy about it.

That sounds like quite a good thesis.
In a completely free society, it would certainly be up to the individual to determine what's acceptable, and what isn't. It has it's ups and downs, but it's an important thought.
The rest about it being the current task of the state to represent what the masses feel is appropriate... it'll hit home well, that's what democracy is supposed to be all about, afterall!
Well, the Canadian laws about consent are pretty blurry... but either way, the shit that happens these days is beyond disgusting.

OK... now... I want someone to please explain to me what separates certain "bad" words from other words. Seriously. I don't get it.

words are one thing. The shock of a word will wear out if it's accepted. In sweden everyone swears, and it's no problem because it's just another word. I would say that you should continue censoring offensive images etc. And the proof is in the pudding. The media consumes a majority of peoples time and especially kids. and they do learn from whay they see. I'm sure if you polled how many people censor what their kids watch, it would be a really low number. So the media is free to shock and tantalize as much as possible. Look at Francis Fukuyama "The end of history and the Last Man".
