So I'm curious about how you guys who study/studied composition perceive the support, or lack of it, that you got for your non-"classical" (I dislike "erudite" or "art" more than this) efforts. I'd also love to know how you balanced the time, since I definitely felt last year wasn't very good for my rock band. I have an interesting anecdote. I applied for two composition programs here in Portugal, one in Lisbon and one in Évora. In the Lisbon interview, when I said I was studying jazz and playing in a rock band, I was immediately warned that a composition program was hard work and I might not have time to waste on other things - this despite the fact that one of the composers is an accomplished jazz pianist, who was pretty much the only one smiling at me. In the Évora interview, I said the same thing, and was greeted by a much warmer reassurance that it was good that I had diverse tastes, and that I'd fit in well with the rest of the community there. This despite the fact that these were much more traditional composers, one an Oxford DMus, knighted and all, and the other a graduate of the Paris CNSM. Go figure. Guess which one I ended up going to?
