Hey guys, I'm sooooo excited to have found a message board for Owen fans. I almost jizzed in my pants when I saw posts by OWEN HIMSELF.
Ahem, in any case, I study classical composition in Portugal, currently doing an exchange program at the conservatory in Brussels. Played keyboards with a rock band back home for a couple of years, and went through a phase when I thought I was destined to be a jazz violinist.
More to the point, I listen to "Plays To Please" at LEAST once a day, have sex to it, and show it to all my fellow music nerds. If Owen is reading this, I would die to look at the scores you wrote for the album, I'm just absolutely in awe of your orchestration powers.
If Mr. Pallett isn't reading this, let it just stand as my "hello" and introduction.

Ahem, in any case, I study classical composition in Portugal, currently doing an exchange program at the conservatory in Brussels. I saw the Basia Bulat orchestra show last night (with OP arrangements) and spent some time thinking about all the now-in-university-composers who have all those Owen TM gestures and techniques and colours as part of their basic orchestration language. Is that you? It's me. Uh oh. Hello! Lalalalala

Right now I'm doing what he did with The Strokes' Hard To Explain, with the Arctic Monkeys' Mardy Bum. <bored intellectual look>It's sooooooooo derivative.</bored intellectual look>

Oh god, no, all of a sudden I feel like that sounded super arrogant. Not what I mean! Owen's got skillz. But you know?

Oh god, no, all of a sudden I feel like that sounded super arrogant. Not what I mean! Owen's got skillz. But you know? Oh, I don't think it's arrogant to say we've got our idols' techniques: eventually it's going to happen, regardless of whether we're trying to be original, traditional, or something in between (the third for most of us, I'd guess). I think it's great that I found a community of like-minded people here. Among the people I know at the various schools I've been in, the only thing they do outside of classical is maybe jazz or film music, I rarely get people interested in doing a rock or pop project. What are you all working on, by the way?

I have the entire scores for "Plays to Please" available, but unfortunately I'd have to spend a generous amount of time in "copyist mode" to make them readable. I laid them out using an older version of Sibelius. (Only "Ultimatum" has been revisited, for recent concerts w/orchestra).
I may get to it sometime, but not today. Maybe on a flight somewhere I'll lay it out and post it.

I want to be a copyist someday, but currently I don't quite have the skills, and it'll take quite a bit of practice to get them. So if you want, I'd be happy to pretty up the scores for you and post them for this community's benefit.

No, there is no such thing as TMI. Go ahead, try to prove this to be wrong.

I'd settle for crappy-looking, most of my scores are like that until I find someone to play them, but I understand you'd want a classier version being distributed. Can I ask you, by the way, what you think were the most important lessons, exercises, books, or experiences you had, learning orchestration?
