Up in the gods again flaregun? Or nearer the action this time? I've still not bought a ticket! I'll get onto it this weekend~ hopefully there's still some left. Who knows where it's gonna be. I'm pretty skint, but so long as I'm central it'll be fiiiinnnee. How about you? I think i'd saw off my arm So if I see loads of armless people in the audience I'll know you're all fellow SHZiners and I'll be sure to introduce myself. Though not with a handshake obviously :-) That could be our equivalent to a 'Hello My Name Is' sticker. SHZine's twiztid take on the membership badge.

How about you? Still plenty of tickets left. Central stalls is pricy (£35) so I decided to slum it a bit and go for side stalls at a bargain £15. Stage left, as Owen always faces that way. What a scary fanboy I am! :-) Seat G8 - come and say hi!

I saw Beirut a couple weeks ago, it was a great show but a relatively short set, they played for slightly under an hour. Cute opener too, I didn't catch her name though. I think we had quite a bit longer than an hour here (London), it felt like we got through pretty much all three albums. Was the opener a Californian lass who did a lot of stuff, Owen-like, with loops? That's Merrill Garbus, trading as tune-yards. I liked!!

Or maybe Basia Bulat, she's been opening for them a bit, and I think did at the Commodore in Vancouver in August? And the "cute" descriptor fits, she's adorable.

I'm *behind* on this violin concerto, but catching up quickly now that I'm home. Pekka Kuusisto will be playing it, by the by; there are no looping or six-string tricks or anything, it's a "traditional" violin concerto, but it should be beautiful.
I don't know how Nico's piece is coming but I assume he's in the same boat as I am: writing furiously.

Not only you and Nico, but also Sam Amidon, who I hadn't heard of before that Union Chapel gig a couple of years back, and rapidly bought all of his stuff after that gig. It's going to be a real treat.

Not long to go now.. quite excited about the whole thing.
I see the Barbican are offering Red and Orange Members (who have tickets) access to see the reherals at 3.30. So if you are a member (yeah I know, I'm not either and yes you'd probably already know if you where), then go grab a double slice of the new concerto.

It's going to be like a Union Chapel re-union... I've got Beth and Dev on the phone! Yeah, but a slightly bigger venue this time. And with a slightly bigger band in the Britten Sinfonia! See you there (well, probably not as it's a big crowd, but you know what I mean....)

Anyone else going to that open rehearsal in the afternoon? I'm in two minds....do I really want to see a rehearsal or would I rather wait for the real deal?

I might only get this chance to hear / see the concerto so I'm really pleased. I think that the first listen will enable me to get to know if enough so I can really appreciate it in the evening. I always think yiou miss things the first time and that when you listen again you pick up more. At least that's the theory

Yeah, it was good. Think I'd need another listen or two to Owen's concerto to fully get it (and alas I arrived too late to catch any of the rehearsal). I remember thinking that the second and fourth movements sounded the most "Owen-like". And Nico's cello concerto was rather fine...I was perhaps the wrong side of the stage to catch much of the cello though, it seemed rather drowned out (or "late to the party" as the programme notes comment!).
I'd hoped they'd make more of the 802 Moment after the interval, and in particular that there would be more of Owen's voice of course. "The Only Tune" was magnificent though, as it always is, though I suspect that Sam's vocal cut-ups baffled a barbican audience :-)

It went really well I thought. I think Missy Mazzoli's piece was my favourite of the first half, though I enjoyed Owen's and Nico's too. Like you say Muz, would be good to have another listen. Also, I wish I knew a bit more about classical canon so that I could pick out the influences talked about in the programme. I thought An 802 Moment was superb! I looked briefly into Sam Amidon's music after the Union Chapel gig a couple of years back, but I'm going to do a bit more exploring. I especially enjoyed the 'last' song, before the encore. Owen Pallett and Thomas Gould (I think) wandering around the circle playing violins was amazing! violin surround sound. BREAKING THE FOURTH WALL MAAAAAN Nice one Owen, my sister is really stressed with work and I took her along last night - she's even less familiar with this sort of music than I am, and she'd never listened to you, Nico or Sam before. But what an introduction! She really enjoyed it and seemed a bit de-stressed so hopefully that's a new convert! (I hope these don't constitute the kind of copyrighted material that got the board shut down before - let me know if they're an issue and I'll remove them, just thought people might fancy a read!)
