I was looking for the uke range... and I found out the uke was developed after a very popular instrument in Brazil of Portuguese origin, the cavaquinho. It's the instrument that does the harmony at the samba schools, did you know that? And one of the main instruments of samba. Anyway - Emyli and Dannyboy, I'm thinking of composing an antiphonal, kind-of-baroque like piece or cycle of pieces, and I thought about the possibility of using Owen's discarded lyrics though I don't know what he'd think of it. Maybe we'd best leave them quiet. Emyli, if you want to send in lyrics, it'd be great! Initially, I thought of posting the vocal score without lyrics and have someone put lyrics on them, but I think that's not the best way to make things happen, right? I'm looking forward to seeing the results of our collaboration!

Danny, I'm beginning to lay down some ideas - is your uke a soprano? Tuned G4, C4, E4, A4? Do you prefer notes, tabs or chords? Can I write "classically" or would you rather be strumming all the time? EDIT: Well, since I finished my thesis and I had a moment to spare, here's a short thing I put together. Came up a bit mixed-style, I used the first poem I found on the tubes. I think it came out pretty neat. Danny records first on this, Emyli goes next. The idea is to make the uke sound lute-like here, probably just playing open chords without actually comping it, but "dude. It's up to you". Use this as base-material, you guys can do whatever you want with it. Just do something!

Ooh, I'll start working on that!
A friend of mine on another forum just posted this poem, if you don't want to set it I probably will.
The earth is blue like an orange
The earth is blue like an orange Never an error words do not lie They no longer supply what to sing with It's up to kisses to get along Mad ones and lovers She her wedding mouth All secrets all smiles And what indulgent clothing She looks quite naked.
The wasps are flowering green Dawn is placing round its neck A necklace of windows Wings cover the leaves You have all the solar joys All sunshine on the earth On the paths of your loveliness.
Paul Eluard (14 December 1895 - 11 November 1952) translated by Mary Ann Caws

Nice! And I like the poem. I can set it nooo problem, though I rather work on our own material if we have it, though I rather listen to what you guys produce over this first. But I can set it! I'd also like to listen to your setting it. I was hoping we'd attract more people also to complement our formation.

We could each do one and compare?

That would be fun. But for the same formation? I still don't know how Dannyboy plays his ukulele... writing chords is a bit limited, I'd like to write more formally. But only if he hasn't got any problems with that. Well. If I have time today, I'll set it. Fine? Being on vacation is awesome.

BEHOLD THE BEAUTIFUL PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE!!!
Bem-vinda! Você pode ajudar, sim. Você tem como gravar a flauta doce e o cavaquinho em casa? Qual é a extensão que você consegue gravar na flauta pro agudo? Como você afina o cavaquinho? Você prefere ler notas ou acordes?
Sorry about that, I'm just asking technical questions about her instruments and way of playing. I was going to set the poem today (found the original in French, by the way... trés bon).
Kind of a serious coincidence my just having talked about the ukulele actually being a variation of the Portuguese cavaquinho and a cavaquinista showing up on the same day.
EDIT: You aren't related to José Saramago by any chance, are you?

Sorry I haven't checked this in a while! I prefer chords so that sheet you posted is fine. I'll try and record it tonight- I've got a mac so would you prefer mp3, garageband, or what? Whoo I can't wait to get cracking on this. And thanks for giving a rhythmically difficult line to sing

Hey folks! I had to travel to Rio for the day and couldn't work on the Orange yet. I think I'll score for ukulele, recorder and mezzo then, counting on the help of our friend from Lisbon. I am thinking of something fast-paced, having the ukulele play a similar pattern as the one in the Hey Dad! ancestor/version on Poos Clouds (-> or -->, can't remember now - it's the one with the ballpoint pens going back to the Phillipines. Great little song). What do you think, dannyboy?
