What a cool version! I'm glad Owen got asked. These session are a great idea, but, really, only this one and the (really, surprisingly...) Wye Oak cover of "Strangers" with Johnathan Meiberg end up being particularly worth it.
Sidenote, I miss Ben Folds being better than he is.

It is cool! The comment thread is an excellent read, too. Everyone is all "He's really good at the violin but he has bad hair" or "You mean he wrote his name in ALL CAPS? Effin' hipster" or "The Tragically Hip Conundrum is to Canada as Aloha is to Hawaii". Party!

I'm having trouble telling what kind of pedals he is using.
so far we have:
1. Boss RC 20 2. looks like a zvex pedal, not sure what kind 3. boss dm-2 4. the blue one might be a boss pitch shifter/delay 5. I can't tell what the darker one is...
any ideas?

Here I thought that no caps would have been the sign of a hipster, but I have it all wrong! My world is turned upside down! But in other news, loved the cover (and I almost feel like there should be an obligatory hair comment here, ha).

(and I almost feel like there should be an obligatory hair comment here, ha). I'm still convinced that the person taking a photo at the end of this video is Owen. www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7-VavPJ6ig Owen... were you at that concert?

I was trying to work this out too! YES to music nerds. The Zvex is the "Box of Rock", I think. From where the dials are (and from plain old listening!) he's just using a delicate amount of distortion for the first half, to boost the octave-down sound a bit. The dark Boss one is the RV-3. Such a classic pedal that I want so much, but it's difficult to get hold of these days. And Richie, talking of pitch-shifters, I'm on the search for the right octave pedal for my violin. The OC-3 looks like the best bet, because of the polyphonic option and the simplicity of using 1 or 2 octaves down. But would I get more out of the PS-5? Can it do all the same as the OC-3? I basically don't understand what the PS-5 does!

My old setup had different combinations of pedals and stuff. I sold some of them when I switched to computer looping. I've spent a lot of time with pitchshifters.
The dark blue boss pedal is a PS-3, not a PS-5. I really recommend it. Typically, I had to pair it with a boost and high cut filter to get it to sound good through the Loopstation (I used a GE-7). Overall, I'd recommend looking into the Eventide Pitchfactor over the PS-3, but the PS-3 is still very cool, it's got a "detune" option which is awesome and a jack for an expression pedal to turn it into a Whammy.
I haven't been able to get a good sound out of the OC-3... it works well for ghosted 'viola' sounds (Andrew Bird uses one) but you can't get reasonable bass sounds out of it.
There's also the Octron, which has a unique sound to it, it tracks very well and I like it too. It's analog, it reads the pitch and synthesizes a tone, it sounds good, especially if you're some analog purist.
But I'd really recommend the Eventide Pitchfactor. If it had been out when I made the switch to rack gear, I might've stuck with a pedal board.
The RV-3 is the first pedal I ever bought, on a whim, in 1998. The Z-Vex pedal is indeed the Box Of Rock. Z-Vex makes a lot of interesting things but I think the Box Of Rock and the Lo-Fi Junky are his "Greatest Hits".

Ah thanks Owen All sound advice (oh the pun), I'm miffed my budget doesn't stretch to accommodate the Eventide, but I can dream. The PS-3 looks really interesting! Are the lo-fi/hi-fi octave settings an issue (i.e. the lo-fi is too lo-fi or the hi-fi is too delayed)? All I'm really looking for is to replicate a bass and give my live set-up some bassy rhythms, maybe double up some riffs too, but nothing too fancy. I'm also curious as to how well the PS-5 tracks for 1/2 octaves down, if anyone can enlighten me? Thanks again OP! and sorry for turning this all nerdy :s

Speaking of Zvex pedals, I was wondering if you used his ring modulator to get those sounds like in 'Lewis takes action" ?
