alrighty! if you like atmospheric stuff: Arms and Sleepers more grungy/punk rock : RedD Monkey (it's my friend's band. there is cello!) difficult to describe/awesomely interesting/i've been obsessed with them and their side projects/played with owen in toronto once: Gowns (hard to google, and no longer have a myspace so... www.cameouttanowhere.com should serve you well) hopefully you know an old band of owen's: Les Mouches if Richie hasn't already said it: The Dovekins lovely neo-classical: Chaz Knapp i think that's enough for now:P

If anyone likes super fun, weird, jazzy prog rock (for lack of a better description) you should check out my friends band Redrick Sultan www.myspace.com/redricksultanband. They're touring across Canada in a few weeks so if anyone lives near one of their stops i would highly recommend checking them out. They're great live.

They're going to be playing in Portland in May with both AU and The Books! I am killing myself I am not there for this!

I spent the last week in Seville and Granada, in Spain's southern province of Andalucía. The region is known for its unbearably hot weather, the openness and laid-back attitude of its people, and its Flamenco. I'm sure many of you will of heard of this traditional style of folk music but for those who haven't, I can describe it as a uniquely and deeply passionate expression of true Spain and of the historic blend of Muslim, north African, Celtic and Germanic peoples that make up the racial background of southern Spain.
It is based on simple elements - one or two flamenco guitars (similar to classical guitars), hand clapping, singing, sometimes one or two dancers (who perform a very specific and impressive type of tap-dancing), and occasionally a cajón (a wooden box that the player sits on with a loose front plate that when slapped makes a loud snare-like sound).
Watching a flamenco performance is an incredible experience that has only ever in my life been matched by seeing Owen in the Union Chapel. The Spanish describe it as "duende" - the moment where the heart-breaking passion of the performer(s) suddenly lets you into their meaning, and you feel their sorrow and their joy. The music "tends to embody an authenticity that comes from a people whose culture is enriched by diaspora and hardship" (wiki).
These days, that authenticity has become muddied by tourism - flamenco is no longer solely performed by gitanos (Spanish gypsies), and what was originally a way to make music for each other and to express pain and joy has now become a way to make money out of sandals-and-socks-wearing, lobster-coloured tourists. A few artists, however, have carried out this transition from traditional art to commercial art gracefully and tactfully, and one is Vicente Amigo, a ridiculously talented guitar player from Seville from a gitano background, whose group includes a few extra instruments but maintains a pure flamenco spirit and style (first video is the best):

I'm not sure they qualify as small, I'm not sure how "big" they are.. but I"m going to list off some of my fav. bands that no one else seems to listen to, and hope that qualifies them.. Yeasayer.. pop/electro/80s style, I Like it because it's so full, and I like the acrobatics of the singers voice. Their latest album, Odd Blood is my fav. They are playing in Toronto on May 01. Also I really like the name.. : 0 The videos.. are seriously bizarre.. Sorry I have no idea how to get rid of the ad??? The New Deal : Electronica.. it makes me move: www.last.fm/music/The+New+Deal/_/I+Feel+LoveWay.. too happy but so awesome: You likely already know Zoe Keating and Andrew Bird... Enter the Haggis Another band I really enjoy.. more so the fiddle stuff.. very diverse.. they cater to the likes of all band members.. so one influences a bit of electronica, another bluegrass/blues (suburban plains) , ect and overall they're considered a "celtic rock band".. but that's just where they started.. they've grown far beyond that Aside from that lately I"m really enjoying Broken Social Scene (not so unknown), Arcade Fire, and the Master & Commander soundtrack.

Yeasayer are awesome. The first album All Hour Cymbals is better but the 2nd album is great too, aside from 3 or 4 shit songs. I'm liking those VL Tone guys in Kydi's link. 8 bit music is pretty sweet, I really like The Vinny Club, an Irish musician who's also a part of Adebisi Shank. That's not Vinny in the video btw
