thanks to ben for the first two verses (+ some minor fixups)
I have no idea how current this version will stay, as owen is always refining lyrics.

I've always heard the second verse like this (adjusted to fit this new recording):
The future is a constant in a world of free will But if we are all predestined, the future: a variable I wrote it, but I don't know what it means, Don't know what it means But a fat-figured wife isn't how I'm gonna end my teens.
I always thought those first two lines were supposed to be deliberately counter-intuitive. Considering this was originally the second song on the album, I imagine it takes place when Lewis is still devoted to Owen (which also fits into the baptismal imagery). He's trying to play the role as prophet and writes down those two lines in a fit of "divine inspiration," even though he isn't sure of their meaning. But, in a way, they fit the theme of lauding Owen, i.e. if humans are left to their own devices and free will, they will constantly repeat the same decisions and mistakes, but, with his divine power and guidance, Owen can shape the future any way he wants. Therefore, Lewis concludes he is right in devoting himself to Owen and promises to do his duty as a disciple.
Or maybe I'm reading too much into it. I just love this song so much.

I am totally tagging it with this.
Thank you for the bootleg (and upload the rest of it! :3). I hadn't heard this before, awesome.

Oh, wait, I guess I'm not. To An Amateur, I really don't think it is "Adieu adieu adieu, I bid thee" I definitely think it is just I'll do da do da do my duty" I was about as close to him at the concert as one could have been (thus a lot of neck-craning ensued) and he was definitely just do-da-do-in' it out. That's because I made it up.

Why would you call it that? This is the post-heartland version. You'll notice when I guessed at the lyrics a year ago, they were a lot more accurate.

Oh god I love that WHOAOAHAOAOAHAHA. It's the best. Does anyone happen to know when/where this song has been played before? Because I know I've heard him play it before, but I can't remember exactly when. It would have been a New York/Brooklyn show, because I've never seen him anywhere else. I'm thinking it might have been the second night at The Kitchen with Matt Smith/Nifty. Anyone remember for sure?

Danforth Music Hall 2007/8 Nope, that's not a NYC/Brooklyn show. I suppose it's possible I've only seen him performing it on YouTube and never live live.

He did play it August 2008 at the Danforth Music Hall (reading your post again I now understand you were saying "heard it live" in NYC area, not just "heard it before"...on first read I thought you were saying it wasn't played at the Danforth). For those who missed it before, the danforth 2008 recording of the song is here: bootlogradio.com/bootlogaudio/audiofiles/FinalFantasy-27Aug2008/FF-27Aug2008-03.mp3
