Edit: I've decided to pack up this thread to minimize board clutter. I'll be posting in The Official Final Fantasy Violin Notes Thread from now on. So, I'm a music student. I'm also dreadfully bored, and counting the days until fall semester begins. I've been noodling around with taking bits of Owen's songs down as dictation practice since I dashed out and bought all his records (ah, that blissful dayweek), but just today the idea struck me: hey, this is pretty sophisticated stuff as far as pop music goes. Surely, lots of amateur musicians have got to listen to it, right? Wouldn't they love to have the music right in front of them, on paper, instead of fiddling along by ear? I know there's a thread or two like this already ('s how I found this board in the first place), but I haven't taken the time to wade through and check off what's been covered already. Well? Requests, questions, comments? I'm most comfortable with traditional notation, but I suppose I could bust out the guitar fingering chart and have a go at some TAB... it probably won't be nearly as pretty as good ol' standard with some chord symbols thrown in for good measure, though. P.S. Please do specify album/live- in some cases, they're very different! Edit: I should probably mention that I'm fine with uh, liberal instrumentation. Solo violin (looped or unlooped) is quick and easy, but I'm open to more ambitious scoring, too. He Poos Clouds for piano trio? I'm on it. This Lamb Sells Condos for clarinet choir? Knock yourself out!

Do I detect a hint of snark, BI/BT? As erm, interesting, as breaking YLIS or A.EXE into four vocal parts Swingle-style may be, I'm sure they've both been picked to death by guitarists by now (and, well, if you can't sing along to a recording, you're beyond my help!). I do love The Miner to death, though, so I'll bite there. I plan on eventually doing full album and 4-hand piano versions of everything with alternate arrangements by request, anyway. ;D I'm guessing Lewis and the Dog are either from the new album or unrelated one-shots, as I'm not familiar with them. I guess I'll check YouTube for clips and get back to you! I'll get working on The Miner Becomes Forgetful tonight, thanks for the suggestions.

I've always wanted to know how to play the piano version of I'm Afraid of Japan (see www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QBYNw_0I4A). I've figured out some, but I'd love some help getting the rest.

Haha, by four hands I mean for two people, obviously! I'm sure you could cobble together a reduction for two hands by pruning out the lines you don't like as much- I'm doing them orchestral reduction style, with cues so you know what line is supposed to be which instrument. Eh, Horsetail Feathers isn't one of my favorites (so much schmaltz!), but I'll consider it. A lot of the new stuff Owen's been playing live sounds a bit experimental, so I'm hesitant to put it down on paper before it's released... but The Great Elsewhere is tempting! A definite finger buster in this current iteration, but still good. P.S. Already making progress on The Miner. I'm playing with a few different ways to incorporate the percussion in the sparser arrangements; haven't decided on any of them, heh!

Hmm! I never liked I'm afraid of Japan very much, but that whole piano medley sounds fun! I'll certainly consider it. I wasn't expecting nearly so much feedback so quickly! I guess I can't complain I've got nothing to do anymore.

haha i figured as much with the four hands of course...
thats fantastic about miner becomes...i cant wait! and i understand about the experimental-ness, i think its safe to say no one would hate you if you waited for a non live version of the song before you start transcribing-scribbling..
god help me. i love that schmaltz! ;D

The good news: I've got all the raw bits and pieces of The Miner Becomes Forgetful down on paper! I should have it ready to post tomorrow, if I have the time to polish it up and get it postworthy. The bad news: it's going to take a lot of work to simplify all those complex rhythms. They're all correct played in sync with the recording and they make sense to me, but they look super funky on paper. I'll take a look at some of the other stuff that's already been posted to see how most people write them; didn't Owen post his own transcription of something a while back? Anyone have a link?

Also, no snark!
I just like it when people come in and are like "Hai goize! You want sheet musiks foh FREE?!"
I just take advantage of that hardcore-ly.
aaaand I like to get carried away when people ask for types of arrangements.
OOOH.
Now that I think about it, I'd also like to request The Great Elsewhere for looped piano / notation.

Thanks for the link to Owen's This Lamb Sells Condos; if he's that ruthless with the funky rhythms, I don't feel bad at all for leaving mine the way they are. I'm happy to report that The Miner is closer to being finished than I thought, now that I'll be leaving all those nasty dots and ties in, but there's one snag... the synth part at the end is really giving me hell. It's so weird! I don't know what to do with it! Right when I think I've nailed down a pattern, it changes and all I can hear is noise. It's pretty much the only thing going on for the last bit of the song, so I can't very well just leave it out, but everything I come up with to fill in sounds terribly lame. What do you all think? Edit: Also, what the hell is a Dazzle Ship?
