Ben - in my excitement about the radio show I completely failed to ask about your new band. Please to let me know more information? ;D
So your radio show's on Thursday at 9pm? Is there a podcast or way to listen again, or is it just live? I go to this performance night most Thursdays, and it's the anniversary this week, so I'll definitely be out...

I love 'Elixir of Youth', lyrically reminds me of Cockatrice... Also, omnichords are COOL. The radio show is live and as it stands there's no listen-again, but that could change. But yeah Thursdays at 9pm. Don't give up live music for it though! My band... well I kinda got "headhunted" by a couple of guys who had a band but wanted to drive it in a new direction and thought my input would help with that (and the fact that I play violin not guitar) so that's what we're doing. We have a bassist and a drummer (who's A GIRL) as well, the singer's from Texas and has a really great voice and we're working out some cool stuff. Some tracks they recorded just before I joined are here (but don't listen to 'Giving In', it's not very good!). So yeah, watch this space!

Shameless plug that my new CD "9½ Songs" is now on iTunes (click). The first and last songs are orchestrated, the rest are piano/vocal solo. NB. I put the release date in the British format by mistake, so it looks like it came out on Feb 11, but rest assured it was actually Nov 2. I've had to email them to fix it, d'oh. Thanks

Hey folks! I've got a recording of my third string quartet, written in 2009. It's more of a bootleg a friend produced as the official version of this concert is yet to come, but still, you can hear everything www.youtube.com/watch?v=DyTupPlnpIoIf you haven't seen the first, here is it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=lHe_yjp-tvcI'd love to hear opinions and comparisons. They were written almost in sequence. I have to write an article about the process of writing them and maybe something one of you guys say help me see something I didn't see before. Thank you all! Hope everyone is doing good!

Wow, fantastic. Really enjoyed both of those videos . How long did they take you to compose? I don't have any immediate comparisons... I'm writing my first string quartet at the moment, as it happens. Well, it's for quartet and an organ drone. Usually I need a narrative or some kind of stimulus to write - do you find that? But this quartet I'm working on - so far - is just for the music's sake. Not really for anyone or anything. It's kinda liberating, just writing for the sound. What's everyone been up to musically lately? I have so many plans at the moment, it's all a bit overwhelming. I have this new CD out ( 9½ Songs) and have been gigging quite a bit. I pitched and helped organise a promenade soundscape in Oxford - review here. Then various bits and pieces of arrangement, transcription, accompaniment, and musical direction work. Lots of big plans for next year . It's all quite exciting, but I'm getting nowhere near enough work to make ends meet yet, and am padding it out with proofreading and other work. Wish I could say I'm a full-time musician How about you? How's your music going? x

Hey! Thanks for the props! The third took me two or three days' work, I guess. The first took longer, I was still getting used to the articulation and all that.
Even when I compose classical music, I usually begin with an image (dealing a lot with soundtracks does this to you) but quickly I start to develop and many times I escape the initial theme. These quartets have names that lose meaning over the course of the development, to regain them only in re-expositions and such. Each of them is associated with a heavenly virtue - we heard Diligence (first) and Purity (third).
I'd love to hear your string quartet.

I think my envy for you guys and your composer skills has gone to my head a little too much. So much that I've started writing sheet music on my computer. I don't really understand 90% of it (as I'm sure Keren will attest), but it's really neat to see your music in notation in front of you. Oh, and I don't want to give away too much, but a friend of mine is currently recording with Leon Taheny, Owen Pallett's former producer! I'll be sure to nag everyone about it in further detail when it's finished; her music is really cool. As for me, I've been keeping busy, but I don't really have anything of note worth mentioning, hence my need to be vicarious. I played a bunch of shows last month, both in a band and as myself, and my record label recently launched a website that I think is cool. Hopefully I'll be able to get back to practicing as soon as I pull myself away from this notation software.... (I transcribed this segment from one of my songs for kicks. It's still elementary school level, but it looks neat-o) Accordion: Harp:

Way to gooooo!! I began to sight-read it and I'm not pretty sure I understand the overall effect of this. I'd have to listen. By the way, have you seen my idea on the other topic? This actually inspired me to say that - we could record stuff like this! And I posted Owen saying something that could be of relevance for you in the Small Talk thing.

Amateur. Wow. You win. Your music grooves pretty hard, and I'm loving the accordion. Job well done.

What's everyone been up to musically lately? Thomas? Matt? Ren? Ben? 123ten? I'm still waiting for Boy of Bark's album.... Aren't we all. C'mon Boy of Bark! Wow, everyone is doing exciting things. Notation programs are totally worth the effort, Tristan, for real. Any plans for further shows in Kitchener? Maybe ones that won't be canceled? I haven't recorded anything of late (working on grad applications and an early-Schoenberg-esque piece for harp as well as doing a whole bunch of volunteer work for a festival) but here is one of the six audio sketches I made for a piece I wrote for the contemporary quintet I play with: www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQObKTQMyYg

Technically the Call for Scores ended September 30th, but I don't see why not. No promises on when we'd actually get it played, though - arranging rehearsals has become a scheduling nightmare.
