ok no that doesn't work, but I've started animation for my video, despite having finished only about 2/3 of the storyboard... I got impatient... but if anyone wants to have a look at it I think I've managed to upload it onto Youtube here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6SUFa0tw2QIt plays for 15 seconds for some reason despite the fact that on Flash it only lasts for 9. It better only last for 9 because that's all the time it's allotted in the movie! I just tried watching it and the movement is pretty fucked up for some reason, maybe it's a big file, but if anyone cares to look past that and give me any feedback that would be super... no really, it would.

Thanks! The guy is coming from the ground, and then being pulled up by the tassel that descends from the cloud. I commend you for watching it - I tried watching it again the other day and realised what a truly unwatchable 5 seconds or whatever it is... I think it's something to do with the frame rate getting messed around with... I'll try again at some point when I've got some scenes stitched together and in a format that doesn't destroy the video :S

Salutations once again, So. A version of the video is officially online and actually playable (and there was much rejoicing!) and if any of yall wanted to have a peek and give me your thoughts that would help me out a lot. There's a missing live action intro that i'm still working on but the animation is the central thing so everything should still make sense. It's in 3 parts: part 1, and then a 'choose your own ending' feature - parts 2a and 2b. On a dvd, a menu would come up and you could choose the ending from there but uh... didn't really know how to do that on the web so it's just in 3 separate videos. It's an appropriation of the pied piper and it's meant to be an existential allegory for 'existence preceding essence' so if anyone picks up on that i commend you mightily and definitely want to hear your ideas about that. Anything you loved/hated/didn't understand/observed - i'm keen to know. I need feedback to write my 'reflection statement'! here's the link to part 1: The CN Tower Part 1 www.vimeo.com/1475766and finding parts 2a and 2b should be pretty easy to locate after that. Enjoy!

I really liked the animations. I have a thing for collage, but I can't find parts 2a and 2b. Are you sure you uploaded them?

Hooray! I was beginning to worry that the silence meant that the video was universally loathed... how peculiar about the other 2 videos, here are the links (I hope!): www.vimeo.com/1476064www.vimeo.com/1476097Let me know if those don't work! Otherwise you should now be able to go forth and continue the saga Don't be shy, what do you think?

It's all in Adobe Flash. When I started the video, I had never used the program before. Much hilarity ensued. After many tears and throwing of useless tutorials across my room, I had 'taught' myself enough Flash to scrape by.
Do you know much about animation programs? I don't think Flash is intended for this sort of thing, is it?

I don't think Flash is intended for this sort of thing, is it? flash is half animation, half scripting, hence its website popularity. vector graphics are like Sirens or Lorelei. I gave them up and just stick to static imaging and gifs.

You could've done the choice at the end with Flash in one "video". Uploading it to sites like Newgrounds would be very easy after that. We worked with Flash in my computer class this year and we were supposed to make a publicity for an existing product. I chose Nutella and used the concept of the Becel ad, with "This Lamb Sells Condos" as the background music. I got 98%.
For your project, you had to create a new scene and have you part 2a or 2b transfered to that scene. Then, change your arrows (The "Nothingness" and the "Being" arrows) into buttons and link that button to that scene. And repeat the same step with the other option. A lot of sites host Flash movies/clips.
Talking about your clip, I really liked it. Like I said earlier, I have a thing for collage. One thing that struck me is the life bar when they travel Africa. The little details like that are always welcome. Though, I didn't understand the fact that the CN Tower was in Africa. Maybe to portrait the fact that kids have no rights but to follow the leader in Africa or something like that?
Overall, I really liked it. The animations were really good. If I'm not mistaken, it's your first Flash project. Which makes it more impressing. Congrats!

haha, Nutella - I thought that was an Australian thing! Must admit that I don't know what a Becel ad is, but it seems to have served you well marks-wise - well done with the 98!
Right you are about the buttons - I originally did use buttons (it certainly took me long enough to make them work, too) but when I needed to put the video onto a DVD I ran into trouble - swf files won't burn to DVD. I had to export them as Quicktime movies (hence the jerkiness towards the end, I'm trying to fix that), and Quicktime won't work with actionscript.
Is there a way to export actionscript and get it on the web/a DVD? Sounds like yes. Gee, that says a lot about my knowledge of Flash...
To tell the truth, the Africa thing was totally unintentional. No deep political messages there. I just liked the map... I was trying to make the CN Tower transcend its geographical specificity, so I intentionally took it out of Toronto, but other than that... so gold stars to you for picking up on stuff I hadn't. It's great that you noticed, because I agree with you about collage, and part of its greatness is noticing all the little images and hints hidden in it. I'm glad you enjoyed it!!

Yeah, I also liked collage because it meant I didn't actually have to learn any real animation techniques, I could just cut out images from magazines :-P
