Have faith in the Owen! He can do magical things. I'm so excited about these new ideas! Welcome back, Mr. Pallett - Toronto missed you. I didn't mean "oh, Owen can't get any better." I simply mean that I think his live show is so incredible as is -- its hard to comprehend how it CAN get better.

I know. And I meant - BEHOLD THE OWEN! HE CAN MAKE THINGS BETTER, EVEN WHEN YOU ARE CERTAIN THEY CAN'T POSSIBLY BE ANY BETTER!

It's not surround sound.
I don't know if we saw Final Fantasy V.I get it's debut in Dublin tonight but it certainly got one of it's first run outs.
The setup appears to be as follows.
Owen has 5 amps behind him (aside, including some really nice vintage looking Fender stuff) and they're connected to an iBook running Linux. The violin and keys go into the laptop which appears to handle the looping instead of ye olde Boss RC-20 XL which is still on his board but I think only as a backup in the event of crashes. Owen seems to have footswitches which controls which part of the loop goes out to which amp when so it has (or should have) the effect that the sound is bouncing around and coming out of different amps at different times.
I say should have because I was sitting right in front of Owen and was too close to really appreciate the V.I effect. I only noticed it on a couple of songs, but it did seem to work well when I did notice it. I think it'll really come into it's own on songs with many layers of looping.

So I was at the Punch Clock show last Friday and was a little further back than where swordfishtrombones was at the Dublin show so I can't say what Owen was actually doing. So there were 2 amps set up in the crowd a little ways back. I really don't think that he was using a laptop at this show but I could've just missed it (again, I was a few people back in the crowd) It looked like it was the same looping pedal but for a few songs he used what seemed to be a separate pedal to send some loops to the different channels that were set up. So the rear left and rear right amps were playing different looped tracks than the front channels. I'm sure that Owen could explain exactly what was going on but that's what I thought was happening. I'm not very technically savvy but I do know that Owen was referring to it as "quadraphonic sound" so not surround. Only 4 channels. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quadraphonic

To be completely honest, I couldn't really tell a difference with the quadraphonic sound. Didn't sound much different than the other 6 or 7 times I've seem him play... then again, he's just starting this thing out, so perhaps he hasn't quite mastered the effect yet.

Maybe it has to do with where you were. I was pretty much in line with the rear speakers and I could definitely hear the sounds coming from the different rear speakers. To be honest the one closest to me was a little too loud for the proximity to me (or just had the treble too high) because the high notes on the violin were a little much on my ears.

I'm using a program called Sooperlooper which in turn runs into MaxMSP for some routing effects. Some shows will be surround, others will just have the amps strewn about the stage. Depends on the venue.
Two of the amps that were at the Vicar St. show were "not good amps for the violin", whereas three were "excellent amps for the violin". If you were sitting in front of the Fender Deluxe, it's possible that you got some piercing notes.
I won't be able to actually play a proper surround sound show until I'm able to work out some feasible forms of amplification. I can't really justify the purchase of 10 tube amps just to make it all work so I'm just going to keep tooling around with it for a proper debut with the fall tour.
Alright take care, xox Owen

Can this be the start of a comeback of the Azimuth Coordinator?

So how horribly pathetic is it that I'm already excited to hear the words "fall tour"? gah! I thought so. God, I hope I don't have to wait that long, I wanna be musically bombarded by Owen's music from all angles too!
