We had some pretty awesome discussion on it last year--although it was admittedly more relevant to this board then--but I'd like to hear what everyone thinks.
Nominees this year are:
Arcade Fire - Neon Bible The Besnard Lakes - The Besnard Lakes Are the Dark Horse The Dears - Gang of Losers Julie Doiron - Woke Myself Up Feist - The Reminder Junior Boys - So This Is Goodbye Miracle Fortress - Five Roses Joel Plaskett Emergency - Ashtray Rock Chad VanGaalen - Skelliconnection Patrick Watson - Close to Paradise
Fully half of the list is from Montreal--but there are no French bands. There's also no hip hop represented. It's way different from last year's list!
Okay. I thought Feist and Arcade Fire were shoe-ins, I'm pleasantly surprised to see The Besnard Lakes, Chad VanGaalen, and Junior Boys there, I haven't heard much of Patrick Watson or Julie Doiron (so I can't say much about their albums--although I like what I'm hearing now), I love both "Ashtray Rock" and "Gang of Losers," but I secretly hope Miracle Fortress (who are being called the 'dark horse' in spite of the Besnard Lakes' album title) win the twenty grand. It's my favourite album of the year so far. (Holy run-on sentence, Batman!)
Thoughts? Were there albums left off that should be there? Conversely, are there any nominations that didn't deserve it? Who is going to win? Dun dun duuuuun

This has to be Chad VanGaalen's. It HAS to. no offense miracle fortress, i found it pleasant enough, but the killer songs weren't there. neon bible doesn't have a chance, because no one wants to give arcade fire any more money. no offense AF. all i'm saying is I bought Chad's album TWICE.

It's tough to determine the winner without talking trash about the runners-up.
Despite the "all white indie rock!" judgements in the press last week, I'm kind of sad that none of my favourite white dudes made the cut: Frog Eyes, Benoit Pioulard, Tim Hecker, Do Make Say Think, Eric Chenaux, Sandro Perri and Fucked Up.
Oh well. We should make an informal betting list. I'd put Feist and Junior Boys both at 1:4.

i'm also bitter about Frog Eyes, but my affection for Chad VanGaalen is making me forget for now.

Tears of the Valedictorian and Plague Park would be on my list, but I'm just a fan boy so my opinion doesn't count.

Tears of the Valedictorian Plague Park You, You're a History in Rust Knives Don't Have Your Back
are the most ridiculous snubs ever.
I vote Arcade Fire so Owen can have won two years in a row haha. Does anyone think they might hold that against Arcade Fire when they make the decision. I think Julie Doiron is every bit as amazing of the best of that list (sorry, but what the FUCK are The Dears doing on this list?!?!) and she needs/deserves the money. She's beein working for over a decade, (probably close to two) with Eric's Trip, Wooden Stars, Gord Downie and her solo stuff which is the best and she barely has a penny to her name. She's paid her dues and Arcade Fire and Feist are probably approaching the set-for-life mark on their careers. The rest of them could definitely benefit from the money too, and the judging is about MUSIC, not MONEY so my arguement doesn't really apply. Still, I feel for Julie. See her live andtry to feel anything aside from mad love for the woman, I dare you. I guess it's good I'm not on the jury haha.

His EP was a while ago, but that Euro tour cdr is amazing.

This made me snatch a bit of Patrick Watson and man, I am not disappointed. For me, it's a tie between him and Chad VanGaalen.

Polaris Prize Goes to Arcad-- WTF? Patrick Watson?!
That's one of the best pitchfork headlines ever.
But I've never heard of this guy, think I'll give him a listen in a bit. He beat out some big names.

Pitchfork is rude! They didn't even congratulate the guy!
The only criticism that people have been able to level at Close To Paradise is that it sounds like Coldplay. And it does. But it's a better Coldplay album than at least two actual Coldplay albums and there's not a bum track on it.
Congratulations to Patrick Watson!
