Hurray for karpe! I've been trying out some stuff with my oboe since I got a new recording program for my laptop...
There may be an (instrumental) cover of the "The Sea" in the near future.

I've been trying to play This Lamb on the old pianny, but since I can't actually work out any of it, I'm stuck to playing the bit that has been scored out in one of the threads on here. I would love it if someone could do the rest of the piece, so I can play it! Anyone feels like doing that..............

So, its my birthday soon, and because of owen, im very tempted to get myself a violin, i already play guitar, and bass guitar, and i just wondered how long it'd take to get to a standard where i could play for fun, rather than just learning how to play the instrument, so basically a decent/average standard?

It seems like some of us play covers of Owen's songs...it might be kind of cool to hear them. Anyone feel like posting your version of *insert Final Fantasy song here*? I've been working on a synth-pop cover of arctic circle. It's not there yet, but soonish? Somewhat unwanted and unrelated, but I learned Fantasy from Owen's live cover on bass guitar. I can play all of it, but need a looping pedal. I might put a recording up somewhere just for the sheer wierdness of it.

Thats pretty cool, ive got a looping pedal myself and at the moment im working on using my synth and guitars to do a looped up version of 'peach plum pear', 'adventure.exe' and given a lot of work maybe 'win and reg'. I fi get the settings of the synth right it should all be good.
Im also looking for a pickup thing for my violin, does anybody know what is good, and what the prices are like?

Im also looking for a pickup thing for my violin, does anybody know what is good, and what the prices are like? There are lots out there that seem ok, ranging $100-200. Depending on what sound and how "permanent" a conversion you want, you'd chose either a transducer built into your bridge, or a removeable one. You'll also want to consider the age and condition of your violin. Got an eye on a detachable model myself; still want the use of my violin's acoustic tone. But haven't yet done the deed - concerned about a biggish, anciently repaired crack in the ribs near the tailpiece/lower belly, as well as some precarious-bridge issues. Sightly scary. Also considering a piezo with preamp, but dunno if this's really necessary. But check out the sleek Fishman ceramic floating pickup... www.activemusician.com/item--MC.PROV100VI(You know this is an extravagence, but how flash is that?!)

Thank you very much for your help, my violin is brand new and is a decent quality.; Once i get myself a job and save some money i shall buy myself a temporary pick-up.
Although i should probably make sure i'm remotely decent at violin before i even consider buying gadgets for it!!!

Why would you want to play violin if you already play 'cello? 'Cellos are SOOOOOO sexy. And the violin? I mean, aside from the wonderful sounds of people like Owen and Andrew Bird and a few others...
Even Brahms, man. Even in Brahms' violin concerto the oboe has the melody. Nobody likes violins. *shakes head*
(I'm kidding, by the way. Mostly.) I do really like the 'cello, though. Hott.

i dunno i just like the idea of being able to play lots of instruments, and so i can be pretentious and irritating about it yeah that's about right and i like how you put cello properly with the wee apostrophe and everything, i usually can't be bothered doing things like that haha

That would be quite fun. You could be a bit Patrick Wolf-y and play 150 instruments or however many it is.

I too have been working on 'The Sea' recently, but as a relative beginner to the violin im still finding some of it tricky!!! But i vow to getting it sounding at a decent, unsqueaky and more in tune by the end of the month, haha! Does anybody have any tips for songs that are good for relatively recent beginners, but still challenging enough to interest me? If so, it would be much appreciated. Wilson xxx

I've been considering transposing some songs to the string bass, both out of curiosity towards the sound and out of the fact that it's the only string instrument I have any semblance of skill in playing. So far, I have "CN Tower" worked out, mostly, although it requires either competence in audio recording/mixing or a looping pedal/pick up/whatever else is needed, none of which I have.
In the meantime, I'll just enjoy figuring out and playing Owen's songs on my own.

i played the violin for 8 years and then quite, havnt played for 2 years and now am serioiusly considering picking it back up. the problem is though i find i tso hard to stay in tune while im playing. i wish i were at a level of violin playing where i could start playing for fun.
