I know, I'm really excited! I'm driving there from Surrey and I'm so gonna get lost. Also, first show I've been to on my own, so I'm gonna be all awkward and nervous and stuff all night. Fun fun fun.

The show was so good last night!
Owen, you truly are a talent. Maybe you don't want more fame/recognition, but you defiantly deserve a lot more! thanks for the music. x

I'm re-living last night as I type. The whole gig was brilliant. I got there nice and early so i got to see the soundchecks and talk to the bands beforehand, before finding myself a nice hiding place. All the acts were super teriffic Corey Dargel - Well worth a listen, cheesy sax and shell included. It's a shame that people never get to gigs early enough so very few people caught the show. He (they) are on later tonight in Nottingham and will do a longer set. Simon Bookish - An outstanding british talent (so he'll probably sink without a trace). He did a selection from Trainwreck/Raincheck (which a certain canadian reminded me that he has a copy as it's not being released till later in the year). The electrtonic composition is played direct from his laptop with him providing the narrative / singing. Its a story so you have to concentrate. I've been listening to his stuff for a while now and this stuff is lashings of ginger beer above Unfair/Funfair (which is a fantasic album anyway) Grizzly Bears - I too am in love with the bears, but not in the same way. The music is so lighter than air and fills you up with happy feelings. The music swooshes and swirls around the venue, the harmonies are in my head, cough cough... anyway they play a great set. It's over too soon. Mr Fantasy - I've used up all the superlatives to describe how good this chap is. He's his usual chatty self and there are the occassion moments when it all comes to a grinding halt (1,2,3), but that's all part of final experience. The lights are low and steph does the slide show (Owen has trouble finding his foot in the dark), the audience is enthusiastic and the show is over all too quickly. He's mentioned Dazzle Ships as one on his favorite albums and has offered to play it and he does as an encore. If I remember my OMD (and I do. Hey I saw them as a support act for G Numan) its Radio Prague, Genetic Engineering, ABC Auto-industry into Telegraph. and that's the end of the show.... ....except the audience is going mad for more and so we get the dreaded 2nd encore. Owen just asks for a request and settles on Sweet Fantasy with Ed guesting on vocal harmonies. Bloody showoffs if you ask me and so on to Nottigham....

It was just so amazing. All four bands were brilliant, but FF just totally blew me away. So undescribably amazing. The OMD at the end was awesome too (and the Mariah Carey, haha).

Hey, I'm only a lowly guest stumbling upon this forum, but man oh man - I'm glad there are others here that went to last night's gig and loved it as much as I did. There was one hell of a lot of talent treading that stage. (Oh, I caught all of Corey Dargel! They have a new fan in me. As do Simon Bookish and Grizzly Bear.)
It only takes three hours of travel, a persuasive letter to a Lumi employee and a unutterably expensive taxi ride home to turn a crumpled Eat Your Own Ears advertisement into the best night of the year.
It's real comforting that musicians like Owen Pallett exist. I'm so glad I went.
Hope you all had a great night, forum-dwellers!
Oh and P.S. kudos to Steph, her OHP-shows complimented the songs perfectly.

if someoneelse can post the same review twice, so can i!
it was an absolutely amazing show. I think the light show detracted from Owen's performance in the first bit of his set; it was pretty cool, but he seemed almost distracted at times (probably because the stage was small and they were getting in each other's way). However, it was an awesome set - he played what do you think will happen next! - and the Dazzle Ships bit - my first encounter beyond a namedrop with OMD - was frankly pretty fucking spectacular. And I enjoyed Sweet Fantasy.
rough setlist (not inc. encores):
That's When The Audience Died Hey Dad This Lamb Sells Condos The CN Tower Belongs To The Dead Many Lives -> 49MP new thing? it seemed familiar but I couldn't put a name to it. This Is The Dream of Win and Regine Song Song Song What Do You Think Will Happen Next?
However, I got home at half three, so my memory is somewhat confused. I'm almost certain all of those songs were there and I don't THINK any others were.
Spent a fair chunk of Grizzly Bear's set talking to some Canadian guy who's name I didn't ask, who knows Owen by way of knowing the Hidden Cameras. Spoke to him again on the tube to Baker Street. Visiting from Toronto with Art students and he snuck away for the evening. Nice chap. Apparently, he saw me leave just as he was coming to get me to ask if I wanted to go backstage and get signings. Alas.
A rare display of genius on my part meant I left my debit card at home, so by way of begging cash of friends I had enough for He Poos Clouds, the 7" of Many Lives and the guns t-shirt; I'll need to acquire Unfair/Funfair and the Corey Dargel thing by other means.
On which subject: Bookish was absolutely fantastic, of course not as good as Owen but worthy of lavish, lavish praise and an opening of wallets. Dargel had disappointed me when I listened to stuff on their myspace, but it worked really well live. Sheila was awesome as she glared at everything and everyone throughout. When she was doing the hitting-wood-together part I couldn't stop thinking of her as a dominatrix. A mixed compliment there I suppose. Grizzly Bear - first UK show, apparently! - were wonderful(and the "which one do you think is the hottest?" bit with Owen was great).
And whoops, 2, 3, 4...

Thanks for posting the set list. I get home and everything just slips out of my mind. Now, that was just the slickest thing ever.
