It's subtitled, "What happened to the Androsynth?" I've been working on it all week and I think I'll be able to get it done.
The lyric book is 20 pages long, typed. Eeeeee.
It'll be performed at Small Fires gallery on 202 Major St., in Toronto.
Although the piece is programmatic, it's decidedly ambient... it'll be performed to accompany Robin's painting.
What's it about?
The human race is involved in a multi-dimensional battle with an android race called the Androsynth. The Androsynth are originally of human construction, and have co-existed peacefully, albeit in a "class" below your average Earth citizen. In the years before the war, many new and interesting issues arose regarding android-human relations, culminating in a distinctly separate Androsynth culture, and headlines such as "Would you let your daughter go with an Androsynth"?
Back to the battle. The Androsynth, originally of human construction, have splintered off and demanded solidarity from humanity. They relocate to a planet off of Alpha Tucanae. Hostilities eventually cease, and further Androsynth-Human relations dissipate.
Many, many years later, the situation for the humans has changed. An Alliance starship Vindicator goes to explore the space around Alpha Tucanae, hoping to re-establish contact with the former enemies of humanity... perhaps even to pick a fight.
When they arrive in the area, they find... nothing. There are no ships, no creatures, no indication that the Androsynth even existed.
Another sentient race is seen milling about the area, a fish-like race known as the Orz. The Orz seem friendly, but their language is so foreign, the universal translator can only create approximations for the true meanings of their words. As a result, communications are restrained and somewhat unconclusive.
The Orz seem to be from another dimension, and speak a great deal about "softer places" and "sliding" and other similar things. Although skeptical, the captain of the Vindicator befriends them, and they exchange information and goods, and go on their separate ways.
Further exploration of the Alpha Tucanae star system reveals remnants of a great civilization on the first planet. Scientists from the starship Vindicator are certain these ruined buildings are what is left of the once formidable Androsynth civilization. There are no corpses, nothing. All other lifeforms on the planet seem unharmed.
A scientist named Buchowski investigates the computer and checks the data records, to find out that the Androsynth had been investigating inter-dimensional travel in their last days. There are mentions of ghosts and malevolent figures interfering with their experiments, and mysterious disappearances and the like.
There is no mention of any war or any reason as to why the entire race disappeared.
Buchowski continues his studies, only to himself go mad. He destroys the data on the computers. He later claims that "the knowledge itself could kill him and the entire human race". Despite therapy and psychological exploitation, the Vindicator's psychologist is unable to extract any further revelations as to what the data entails, or why Buchowski would destroy it.
The captain of the Vindicator suspects the Orz may have killed off the Androsynth. There is a considerable divide amongst the crew. Some people are happy their former enemies are destroyed; others believe the Androsynth are "gone", not "dead"; still others are more creeped out by the Orz. The captain decides to maintain the Orz alliance, but to insist that the Orz reveal the secret of the Androsynth's demise.
"Dammit, what happened to the Androsynth?" is, for the most part, an extrapolation upon Buchowski's diary entries and the conversations between the Orz and the Vindicator's captain. It's a very, very, scary song.
