i was just gonna rank the albums, but then i saw your lists, and i'm not that bored, so:

The first two are pretty much interchangeable, though.

Oh yes, in response to the Fag Patrol thread earlier: it also has the best (in my opinion) version of Nieces Pieces (on top of the best Helsabot and Jennifer Lopez). I love the stand-up bass backing to those gorgeous, brutal lyrics.

1. Knife play - natch, one of my allout alltime faves, like, of all
2. A Promise - Vies for first, but but from leagues below the true 1
3. Fag Patrol - I picked this up in Japan, wow! 1000 pressed? Luck!
4. Chapel/Chimes - although i can't find this anywhere, I esp. like the continued "ceremony" dialectic
5. Fabulous Muscles - has some of my favorite songs by the band, however, including "fabulous muscles", although the version on "insound tour support" i like more, if it is in fact all that different.

As the scourge of rating scourges us, i will ask a substance question:

i wouldn't say it sucks... homonculus would be fairly low on my list as well, but that's not because i dislike the song, but rather, i love so many of the songs on that album...

and besides, the list is his favorites, not what he considers to be "best"

I love Brian The Vampire and it was difficult for me to put it so low on the list. Homoculus, on the other hand, I really don't care for - but then again I must be fucking deaf so what do I know? There are so many good tracks on Knife Play, for me it just doesn't live up to the others.

I can't believe Fabulous Muscles [the album] is getting such a bad rap from you guys. To me, it's one of the best albums ever made and my personal favourite of Xiu Xiu's. It's his most depressing and accessible to date. I fucking love it.

I agree that Homonculus is an awesome song--you should give it another listen. It really gets good about two minutes into it, starting when Jaime sings "Oh, Yvonne, it's like a wedge...." It's much better than Luber or Dr. Troll, in my humble opinion! :-)

As for Fabulous Muscles, it has some great songs, don't get me wrong, but as an overall album I find it lacking. Knife Play and A Promise are great ALBUMS, with a flow and a cohesiveness that Fabulous Muscles just doesn't have. It seems more like a compilation of songs than an ALBUM, reinforced by the fact that 5 of the songs (if you count Valley) were previously released! Also, the fact that it is more accessible has turned me off. I like the more challenging Xiu Xiu, the stuff that HURTS to listen to. I have high hopes for La Floret though, after hearing Fleshettes....
