MNF: Willy Boly and Vincent Kompany tackles: Did both deserve a red?
Willy Boly was sent off early on in Wolves’ 3-0 maxbet defeat at Manchester City on MNF, but was it deserved? And was Vincent Kompany's tackle on Mo Salah earlier this month worse? Running in to win the ball in midfield at the Etihad on Monday Night Football, the defender then followed through on Bernardo Silva, forcing referee Craig Pawson to send him off. Wolves struggled thereon, and though Jamie Carragher said in the MNF studio there is no chance the red will be rescinded, he insisted it would have been judged a fair tackle even 10 years ago. "There's no way this is going to get overturned, he said. "Ten years ago, 15 years ago, it's not even a foul.
"I don't know why he's gone in like that, side on, he's left the floor slightly, he's won the ball and he doesn't catch him really high, he catches him on the ankle! In my day, if you were caught on the ankle it wasn't a problem, you just got on with it!" Earlier this month in City's 2-1 win over Liverpool, maxbet defender Kompany escaped a red for a high challenge on Salah, picking up on a yellow from Anthony Taylor. Speaking after Monday's game, Carragher questioned whether contact has to be made with an opponent for a tackle to be considered dangerous play, referencing Kompany's challenge on Salah on January 3.
"It doesn't matter what we as supporters think, all that matters is that in referee's eyes now, that for them is a red card. You can't tackle like that, you can't! If there's any danger, forget getting the ball, that's gone out of the window."I'm not saying the referee is wrong, I'm saying that's the game now, so get used to it."There's a lot of Liverpool supporters getting in touch, saying: maxbet 'What about Kompany's tackle?' but before we get to that, Virgil van Dijk made a very similar tackle to the Boly one, on Dries Mertens in Liverpool's win over Napoli in the Champions League, where he goes for the ball with his studs up, wins the ball, maybe even worse, slightly higher on the ankle, and he gets away with it.
