check out what the strings are doing on the bridge of "Polar Vortex" and compare it to "---> (ii)" lol Wow, that's much more subtle - I wouldn't have picked up on that one by myself! Owen, do you think you might release an orchestral score book for Island like you did for Heartland? I love my Heartland score book!

Owen, awesome hearing that 2001 was an inspiration too. I happened to watch/listen to them in parallel over a couple of days and you could really feel the connection.
Recentlyentered, I love my Heartland score book too, and my In Conflict piano book! Hoping for Island sheet music in some form too.

I'm not sure how I missed this, but I didn't know until reading your post that there was an In Conflict piano book, and now I'm sad since it doesn't seem to be available to buy online.

Island won't be sheet music, unfortunately. The score is just too fucking dense to print, and those Heartland books (as nice as they were) were expensive to print and ship. I don't have a tonne of In Conflict piano books left, but I do have some! I'll see about getting them up in the store again

Are there any plans for new merch (and maybe some leftover shirts from Heartland and In Conflict?)

No leftover Heartland shirts, unfortunately. They're gone. We have In Conflict tees, still, but I think we're out of S and M and very low on L. We have lots of other stuff, mostly physical copies of all releases-- we have everything except the Spectrum 10"s, as the remaining copies of that record were damaged in storage. We haven't prepped any new merch. COVID shut us down in this regard. The plan was to manufacture merchandise to correspond with future touring plans, but I guess it would make sense to bump that up, so... we'll get on it

Is there any chance you'd post or sell a digital version since there aren't many copies of the physical books left?

I'd buy an In Conflict piano book and shirt in a heartbeat. (And the new merch too.) I could have sworn I used to have a t-shirt with the art from either the Lewis Takes Action or Lewis Takes Off His Shirt 7" album art, but I can find no trace of these having existed. If I had one once, I lost it a decade ago, anyway. Off topic from merch, I laughed a few days ago listening to This Lamb Sells Condos: "When he was a young man, he conjured up a fire-mare / and burnt off both his eyebrows and half a head of hair" ..... so Lewis becomes Brad Lamb #confirmed? I kept putting off doing a post about Island feelings because I'm useless with words and have no idea where to start so sorry if this is just a massive ramble... 5 years ago I travelled to Germany for the first time to hear Owen premiere most of these songs in Berlin, followed by 2 nights in a row in Essen a week later, by which time I already knew the songs well from bootlegs. Island was already my favourite album in the world (even though I'd never actually heard it!) and I wished every day I could relive my trips to Germany - I decided I would try and make all the Island shows in Europe. The next one was the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie 2 years later - it was the most money I'd ever spent on a gig (although I got a mini holiday out of it too) but I wouldn't have missed it for anything. The songs had changed a lot and they had become even more beautiful. Another 2 years passed and then Owen played Vienna and Munich last year. It was the first time I'd ever seen him play a full set solo - there were beautiful visuals and the songs had somehow become more gorgeous still. I remember sitting there thinking "this has got to be the most beautiful experience of my life" and I felt like I'd been transcended into another plane of existence. Polar Vortex has always been my favourite (I used to cry just thinking about it), but I also fell in love with Perseverance of the Saints which I'd never heard live before and the vocal looping towards the end of Fire Mare was out of this world levels of beautiful. I'd been anticipating Island so much for so long that I could hardly even imagine it being a real album one day - to me it had kind of just become all my German adventures and bootlegs and memories. And thanks to Island I've been to 6 different German cities for the first time (I had to go to Dusseldorf and Bremen too for flights) plus Vienna and spent time touristing in all these places. I love Germany now and it's the reason I became confident in getting public transport abroad (which used to terrify me) and started to try and learn languages.
Anyway, after all these years I suddenly had 45 minutes warning that I was about to hear actual real Island. I was in too much shock to function so I phoned my friend in Turkey who I knew would be as excited as me (she wasn't online and I only phone her in extreme emergencies, of which this was most definitely one) and we freaked out together (I found it on Turkish iTunes and was busy trying to find a way to trick iTunes into letting me panic-buy it but then I realised I only had 20 minutes to wait til UK midnight!) I did the same thing as for In Conflict and had my first listen in complete darkness to shut out everything else. I'd never anticipated anything more, but still it managed to surpass all my expectations. The sound quality was not of this world - it felt too good for my cheap earphones and my iPhone and my ears and the world. My mouth was hanging open the entire time (and for about 2 days afterwards) and I was so overwhelmed with awe I was hardly functioning for the next couple of days (in a good way, and it coincided nicely with a 4 day weekend). The intro sounded just like the very first time I heard Transformer in Berlin, but so much better. The low grumble of the strings at the start of Paragon sounded amazing... every song is too perfect to try and describe but my favourites of all are Perseverance which is so unbelievably beautiful, Polar Vortex always and (possibly most of all, or almost as much as Polar Vortex anyway) A Bloody Morning which I'd never heard before - wow it is immense and I am completely blown away <3 We had a couple of days of stormy weather just as Island was released and there is nothing more powerful than walking through the wild winds listening to A Bloody Morning on full volume. That's the only one I've never heard live and I can imagine it sounding phenomenal with an orchestra. I'm useless at interpretations, so it's been really interesting reading this thread! Sorry for the fangirl essay and thank you Owen for making these miserable times so much better, it was exactly what I needed <3

<3 thank you for such a nice post, Cat! I'm glad the album met your expectations-- pretty much across-the-board I've been feeling like people are happy with it I really am, too, thrilled tbh. Sad that the album had to come out under COVID, so I couldn't tour it just yet, but very happy that it's out at last.

I was so looking forward to the Elbphilharmonie show - hopefully I'll see you again soon once all this is over <3

Somehow I have had this account for 9 years and have yet to make a single post but now seems like a good time to start!
I was a freshman in college when I first heard Heartland 10 years ago and the album blew my mind. It was the first Owen Pallett release I had ever heard and I had the album in constant rotation after that. I then tracked down all of the Final Fantasy releases of course and still couldn’t get enough but Heartland was definitely my go to album. Between dissecting the albums narrative and attempting to transcribe the songs for a brass quintet, I was pretty sure Owen had tapped into some sort of magic on this release so when I saw the post about an album that was a narrative sequel to Heartland I was overjoyed and couldn’t wait to hear it. I somehow managed to avoid all live recordings/bootlegs (except for the “Lewis Gets Fucked Into Space” video on Facebook) because I generally like to go into albums blind if I can, even avoiding singles if I want to experience the album all at once although if I had realized how great some of the live recordings were, I’m sure I wouldn’t have been able to wait!
Then a couple of weeks ago I saw a post about Island releasing at midnight and almost couldn’t believe it was actually here! I can’t even think of another example of an album I love so much getting a true sequel and I was finally about to hear it.
I immediately loved the dark opener, I found myself holding my breath as the sustain of the piano chords seem to hold on just long enough to release before the tension explodes. Then the beautiful guitar of Transformer kicks in and I feel like I’m right back where the story left left off and the album sounds so…big, I mean the production is immaculate and with the right sound system it really is a remarkable listen. The intensity of A Bloody Morning juxtaposed by the ecstasy of the Fire-Mare, only to push further into the cosmic drifting of getting fucked into space is something so magical that it could only happen in an Owen Pallett album. There’s so much to digest both musically and lyrically in this album that I can sense a repeating pattern of my many Heartland listens a decade ago. After each listen, I can’t wait to start it over again and in a world with so many lackluster sequels I could not be happier with Island being a part of the Spectrum story!
Also, I am digging the He Poos Clouds and Has A Good Home remasters and can’t wait for physical versions of everything <3
