They are honest. The music is true. I don't know how better to phrase this. It sounds great, too - all basic things, but that does it for me.

I started listening to Xiu Xiu after hearing much critical acclaim. It was hard to listen to, but I liked it. As last summer dwindled into last fall, and subsequently, the winter, I got more depressed and pulled my Xiu Xiu records out. Jesus, all the songs are about 100 times more powerful when you're in the absolute bleakest of bleak moments. They all seem to be about giving up, and letting go, but there's hope in there, and it drug me through shit.

I feel like taking another stab at this. I'm not an intrynsically unhappy or angry person, but the music that means the most to me is that which totally makes you feel what the creator is feeling, and that which can empathise with you when life is less than favourable. I'm listening to Apistat Commander right now, and just the raw passion... It's mindboggling. That's what I meant by honesty in my post before. Why write about what you're feeling if you're going to hide it away, sterelyse it?

i like it because its this horribly bleak music with a sense of humour.
of course the humour isnt like laugh out loud all the time, but how can you not smile and feel terrible at the same time when you see the cover for a promise?
thats what i like about xiu xiu.
some songs are really pretentious too (walnut house), but i think that somehow they are sorta giggling about it too. you know?
i dunno, just a really good band.
