as anyone who went to a show probably noticed, jamie himself pronounces it shoe shoe (as in, what you wear on your feet)

The band that played before Xiu Xiu at the recent Philly show pronounced it "shwee shwee." That's definitely the worst variation I've heard yet.

As a person taking Mandarin and having just spent a buttload of time with pinyin at the beginning of the semester, there are an assload of ways to pronounce it. But if you wanted to pronounce it in true Mandarin (ie no accent): Xiu Xiu It is almost like a "sh" sound but not as heavy. Imagine a medium between "sh" and "s" for the X sound. It is a sound you learn when you learn pinyin pronunciation. the iu is a eee-you sound but really fast, and not pronounced articulately like eee you. It sounds alot like a long o (or "oo") sound but there is an "ee" sound before the "oo" when spoken so "sh/s" "eeu" that's the best way I can describe it. Damn these sounds not native to the american language Then again. That's only official mandarin pronunciation and anyone from anywhere else other than the Beijing institute will say it a bit differently.
