i've only checked this mesage board twice, but some of it is a bit creepy. i know it's fun to think about and talk out ideas brought up by lyrics of artists you appreciate, and that's great, but don't forget that these artists are people too. it seems kind of creepy/invasive at times, maybe because xiu xiu's 'fame' is a bit on the smaller, realistic scale. we're not talking about charro here. maybe save some people a bit of privacy that they probably need. (and i don't mean this in a internet flame-sort of style, just in a 'think before you talk' kind of manner.)
yours, justin

i'm actually kind of agreeing with david here... in xiu xiu's music, the band have chosen to let emotions out of the closet that you're not even supposed to feel, let alone say out loud. but it's important for art to be honest and push buttons and make people deal with shit they wouldn't have done without being introduced to the art. now yes, if the conversations turned to fisting techniques and favorite types of cats to slaughter, then perhaps that would be beyond the range of what xiu xiu are really about, but they're not. people are saying things bluntly, and sometimes, that may creep some people out or seem to be too involved with artist...
deal with it, and if you can't, why the hell are you listening to xiu xiu?

there was something i did in literature this year about the "death of the author" being the "birth of the reader" or something similar. once it (whatever it may be) is out of the artists hands its open to everyone else's (mis)interpretation.

no see thats exactly my point. talking about life experiences with each other, talking about emotions brought up by music, talking about lyrics, i mean, that's all totally legit. i'm not denying that it's sometimes powerful stuff, or strange or complex.
what i'm saying is not legit is 'does jamie have aids?' or some of the other threads that seem invasive. you've all made the point that is THEEEE point when discussing xiu xiu, which is that everything is intense and personal. but if there's things that arent being shared via lyrical content, interviews, conversations, whatever, that i must say there is a point where at least some things are tasteless to wonder about.
just talking.

you consider it tasteless to wonder whether or not jamie is hiv+? um... he did write a song that includes the words "AIDS HIV i cannot wait to die, can't you tell can't you tell, can't you tell?" now, i understand that jamie probably only put himself into the mind of someone who is HIV+, but he did write that song, and many could possibly interpret that as his way of dealing with the disease, so i see no reason why it would be inappropriate to ask if perhaps he was positive. and if you read the contents of the post, most of the discussion is about possible interpretations of those lyrics; of course, there are inappropriate posts by stupid people who need to grow up, but those exist on any message board...
and as to his sexuality, that is a completely understandable question concerning the lyrics. i see see nothing wrong with asking uncomfortable questions, whether it's about similar topics, or about the band members themselves. they've put themselves out there for all to see with their lyrics, and i doubt they're offended that people have those kinds of questions. of course, i can't speak for the band, but i think it's pretty obvious

if someone asked "does jamie have a girlfriend?" would you be offended? now ask is "is jamie gay?" a different question?
no? it's as much descrimination to avoid things sometimes as to put them in the forefront.
with album titles like "fag patrol" and songs like "hives hives" it's IMPOSSIBLE to talk about xiu xiu and not bring these issues up. i agree, that's the point.
