Can anyone tell me if the shows on Xiu Xiu's current tour are Jamie Stewart doing solo shows or if the full band is there? I'm wondering what to expect for the New York show. Thanks ahead of time.

Xiu Xiu played Portland on Saturday, it was Jamie solo with guitar. If anyone's interested, he played "Fabulous Muscles," "Dr. Troll," "20,000 Deaths...," "Hives Hives," "I Broke Up," "Nieces Pieces" & "Sad Pony Guerrilla Girl" ....maybe one other...
It was my first time seeing him live, and though I'd love to see a performance with the full Xiu Xiu band, Jamie's solo performance was riveting, I really like the direction he seems to be going ("Fag Patrol," this current tour--surely a response to having their gear stolen, but still)...the level of intimacy in that room Saturday night was almost unbearable, nothing short of breathtaking ...

I just went to the show in Ames, Iowa and Jamie had a ton of stuff for sale. There was the following: A Promise CD and Vinyl, Fag Patrol, Knife Play, Chapel of the Chimes (I think), and a T-shirt.
Prices per item ranged from $10 to $12.

hello friends,
i just got back from the show in pittsburgh. i'll talk a little bit about it.
first, devendra banhart was surprising and really, really good. he sat and played miked acoustic guitar and sang. a very unique voice that sounds, for lack of better terms, like one from the first half of the century - very in-the-throat, vibrato at the ends of words, etc. good guitar work, and clever lyrics, my favorite being the song that goes through the animals. jamie said, before starting his set, that devendra was his favorite artist; i can see why.
as for xiu xiu: it was just jamie, with an electric guitar through a small amp.
played a good set... did a fantastic job on 'suha' that really brought people into the music (i think), and i was really excited to hear 'sad redux-o-grapher.' i mean, you're thinking, what's that song without the strings? and i will tell you: two of the nicest harmonics i've ever heard. amazing.
around this time, jamie says, 'this is really presumptuous, but if anybody has a request, i'll do my best to play it for you if i can.' this was met with a chorus of calls for 'fast car.' he said, 'you know, it's a mistake when you cover a song that's better than any song you've ever written.' and passed.
next break, i called for 'homonculus'. jamie apologized: 'the only thing worse is to not know how to play the songs people request,' he said, or something to that effect. somebody else called out for 'sad pony' and good god i am very happy she did. let me say, if you see him solo, this song is worth hearing.
and then he closed with a subdued version of '20,000...'
overall: louder than i expected - great guitar dynamics to go with the singing - and seeing him right there singing and doing everything is really impressive. it's obvious how much he's giving in his songs; one of the few people ever who can play and sing with eyes closed almost the whole time and not look cheesy. and imitate synthesizer notes. although devendra clicked, and that was real neat, too.
afterwards i talked to him briefly and he was incredibly nice, confirming my suspicions.
in conclusion, pittsburgh is a land of many contrasts.

Just thought I would add my 2 cents on the Pittsburgh show. It was great to see Jamie solo, as I have already seen the full band perform before, but I was a little sad at first that no pots, gongs, metal pipes, or harmoniums were going to be played. A show not to be missed, since Jamie gives it his all on every song.
The songs that were played were: Helsabot, Suha, Fabulous Muscles, Sad-Redux-O-Grapher, new song, Sad Pony Guerilla Girl, new song, 200,000 deaths.... I may have missed one, but I'm not sure.
Anyway, the new songs that were performed are amazing. Fabulous Muscles is on the split EP, but the other two are not. One of those two in particular stood out, and I can't wait to hear it on the new album (if it will be). Part of the chorus contained the lyrics "there's a constant buzzing coming from my behind," or something like that. I felt it was the best song perfromed that evening (next to sad pony guerilla girl, which had Jamie INTENSELY immitately the backwards tape section of the song). Very melodic and captivating.

I went to the NYC show at the Knitting Factory last night. I was a little uncertain how the show would be with just Jamie alone, but I shouldn't have worried about it. He did a fantastic job, working wonders with just his voice and a guitar. The beauty of his voice really came through live much more than it does on their albums. The setlist was something like this:
Sad Redux-O-Grapher Fabulous Muscles 20,000 Deaths Helsabot I Broke Up New Song (the one about a beehive) Sad Pony Guerrilla Girl Nieces Pieces
Helsabot was dedicated to Jamie's brother who was there apparently. I was happy to hear Jamie scream the "This is the worst vacation ever..." line in I Broke Up rather than whisper it like he does on Fag Patrol. Fabulous Muscles is insanely catchy.
The best part was after the show. My friends and I went outside the club and Jamie walked by. I nervously stopped him (he had a sad look on his face), but as soon as I did, his face lit up and he was incredibly nice. I told him that the show was great and that I had emailed him before (he may have even remembered me). Anyway, I asked him if he'd give me an e-mail interview after this tour for my music website and HE AGREED!
The guy selling merchandise was the tour manager. I yelled at him (not really) for not scheduling any D.C., Philly or Baltimore shows. Also got a copy of the Ten in the Swear Jar album which he said was the last. Unfortunately, they were all out of Xiu Xiu shirts.
I'll have a more detailed review of this show up at my website soon.

that "beehive" song is "i love the valley". it has the lyrics: "my behind is a beehive/there's a buzz in my backside...."
you can download it from the ten in the swear jar site on mp3.com.

i also went to the nyc show unaware of who defendra was and fell madly in love. his voice. his presence- a mad dog snapping out and clenching onto each lyric.
xiu xiu was also so good. how delighted was i over the intensity that overcame the brief (slight) disappointment upon seeing that indeed there wouldn't be any electric noisy bursts that had dragged me into their music.
he was electric all on his own.
and the collaboration of defendra and xiu xiu at the end doing "Take on Me" was entertaining. so well matched in their contrasts.
"it's going to take precious money..."
