i really wanted to tape xiu xiu when they came around but have no idea of how to go about it in regards to mics, and splitters etc. i have a mini disc recorder and that's it. what else do i need to get a decent sounding recording without going broke?

I bet a good condenser mic would do the trick... You can get those at any music shoppe or on ebay. I would do some research first about that because I have no clue. After that I think it is all up to mic placement. You would probably want to have it be stationary rather than just holding it, maybe pointing it somewhere between the PA speakers and the actual band to get a good ballance of sound. Experiment on the opening bands.
Getting a board out at a good club would be cool, but you would have to know the folks running sound.
