After a day of headscratching, I said "no" to a particularly lucrative offer from a UK ad agency who wanted to use "Adventure.exe" for a commercial for Orange, a wireless service provider.
Although I'm not against selling music for commercial use, I ought to choose one or the other: the song will be sold to the public in the album format, or sold to the corporation to sell their product.
So, "Adventure.exe" still belongs to the people who've bought "Has A Good Home". Congratulations!
This is a grey area, however. To maintain my responsibility to the record buying public, I will, below, describe all the non-album sources that Final Fantasy album/single tracks have ventured into.
As far as I know, Final Fantasy songs have been used in the following ways:
1. "The CN Tower..." is featured in a new Douglas Coupland film called "Everything's Gone Green". 2. "This Is The Dream..." is featured as the theme song for a Swedish news programme, the title of which I forget. 3. "This Is The Dream..." was featured in an episode of the Canadian comedy series, "Godiva's".
Also, these are the paid compilation appearances:
1. "This Is The Dream..." appeared on a compilation issued by Collette, the overpriced French boutique with the lovely mannequins. 2. A song I can't remember was featured on a new-folk compilation, along with all the other usual suspects.
All other appearances, that I can think of, have been strictly promotional. (The Inrocks CD sampler, the Foggy Notions sampler, etc.)
This list will continue to be updated. If any Final Fantasy song is all of a sudden going to be sold to, say, Bank Of Montreal or Rogers, believe me, it will be discussed here before the contract is signed. Is that fair?

Personally I don't feel ripped off if I buy a song (via an album), that is also sold to a company. Take the money, and use it to make more music. Then, at a certain stage, the money will be sufficient to avoid needing to sell any more music at all, to anyone.

Yeah, the way I see it, selling your songs to be used in advertisements is beneficial to you in more than just financial terms. You'll also get a lot of new fans that way. And that's a good thing, isn't it?

Spidey: Can you elaborate? Because I think there might have been some serious miscommunication between myself and somebody else over the weekend.
As in, I wrote: "I think the answer is no" and he read: "I think the answer is yes."

Has that "Orange wireless service provider" thingy anything to do with that radio commercial on XFM? Like: "Orange".."there's no word that rhymes with Orange.." blah blah? If so, I must admit, I wouldn't like to hear "Adventure.exe" featured in it in any way..
Basically it is true that selling a song to be used in commercials is beneficial. On the other hand..I can understand every artist who doesn't want to be the musical face of "Big Brother" or any other company or whatever. It will always be like: Oh, isn't that the chap who wrote the song that was featured on this or that commercial..? If people will care and remember at all.
Just my opinion..

P.S.: just thought about "Orange" getting a bad reputation.."Adventure.exe" would still be linked to it *shudders*

Yes I saw the ad on UK TV last night too. I just came into the room and heard the song and I thought I had left my computer on playing music and was rather surprised to see it was actually coming from the TV. (I hadn't read Owen's post by then). I should think the ad was at least a minute long.

Wait. That means they use the song albeit Owen said NO? Or did he say YES and I've misunderstood his whole entry? I'm confused..
Hey Owen, sue them! They've no right at all to do this when you declined the offer!

UPDATE!
Tomlab and I miscommunicated. I said, "Let me think about it," but the ad agency needed to know right away, so Tomlab took the plunge and said "yes" before I could write back "no".
Right now I'm extremely depressed about the whole thing but can really find no fault in Tomlab's actions. Nor do I see any point in pursuing any rash manoeuvres. Me and Tomlab are still buddies. We'll work it out.
I'll keep you posted.

Wait, how is there no fault in TomLab's actions? They made a decision about using your music without a definitive answer from you. They should have said no since they didn't get any sort of a positive response from you, right? I think what they did was wrong.
But what's done is done. Were I in your position I wouldn't do anything rash either. But I'd be upset about it.

When I saw (heard) the song on the Advert I rushed online, all excited, and then when I saw your original post I was confused (again)....but I thought you must mean that it was a DIFFERENT version of the song that you'd allowed to be used (although it didn't sound any different to me)! Anyhoo.......for what it's worth, me and Don have been talking about the whole thing, and we reckon it's turned out for the best, because the song works perfectly with the ad (it's very tasteful) and like others have said, it can only be good that you get more money and can therefore be free to make more music....plus it will bring your music to more people. Everyone's a winner I reckon and like I said last night, I'm dead proud of ya and now when I talk about Final Fantasy at work and stuff, and the silly people say 'who's that' I can say, oh you MUST know his stuff, he's even on the Orange advert for goodness sakes, where have YOU been! Love on ya Spidey & Don =^..^= =^..^= p.s. and PLEASE consider somewhere in the Middle bit of England in October The Social in Nottingham was a magical venue, would be fantastic to see you back there
