The Hilarious End of Final Fantasy
« Thread Started on Jan 20, 2006, 2:20pm »

Lots of rumours are floating around! It's amazing how people talk.

"Firing the string quartet" was a series of phone calls and ego-massaging. We all feel very good about it, except maybe Bethany who I haven't talked to personally. But Jenny (and John) are expecting in July so it would be an effort anyway.

"New Album" is sounding frighteningly like a mega-musical. It sounds funny, glorious and much like career suicide. Every time we work on it me and Leon get feelings of jumping off cliffs. I anticipate that Sarah Liss will love it, Tim Perlich will dis it, Pitchfork will hate it, the UK will ignore it and France will call it the Album Of The Year. I am preparing my interview face as we speak.

"Sickness" is no longer an issue. I am healthy. My teeth are clean.

"Election" is a pretty spectacular thing! I feel sympathy for Paul Martin. I'm voting for Olivia Chow but I hope everyone remembers that Paul Martin's shitty campaign belies his many years as Canada's greatest finance minister.

If anybody loses hope, close your eyes, touch your chest and whisper to yourself, "Be wild, children, be wild."

I'd like to think that there are some people in the UK who won't ignore it.

The UK just needs to get over the Arselick Flunkys (sorry Artic Monkeys) at the moment. Like how may double page interviews in the Sun do they need?

as long as the arctic monkeys are 1)very good 2)the only proletarian indie band in the UK, they'll get coverage from the tabloids, just like the guardian/observer spent most of last year talking fixatedly about Arcade Fire and the Go! Team.

But there'll always be room for Final Fantasy in the hearts and minds of the elucidated British public. I've made about two dozen converts so far, and word-of-mouth is a pretty thing :)

Also, release the "New Album" onto your adoring public RIGHT NOW. You know, like in Kong. Except not in New York.

Would you rather more people heard it? And is that a silly question? Because I vaguely know some folk who don't work of a Wednesday, and we could start some sort of inner city onslaught. We could leave esoteric messages on the back seats of buses, and the like. Slip Final Fantasy codewords into all the books in civic libraries!

And it might start some gassin', or an old fashioned putsch. Set tongues all wagging across the breadth of the country. And you'll get mentions in the local rags, at first. Two columns worth in the Wirral Globe, and the cover of the Evening Post. Then full-page spreads in all the National Sunday Supplements! And the word will trickle right up the Cambrian Coast. And hard-as-nails cocklers will play you under their shallops. And they'll like, totallyyy lap you up on the Shetlands.

Good god, Final Fantasy gigs would be packed with the West Kirby blue rinse brigade. Now that would be a sight to behold :).

No. I'd rather sell less records than more records. It sounds contrarian but actually makes a lot of sense, maybe we can talk about it some time.

Oh do please explain. I thought of a number of possible reasons, such as:
- If you sell less you will try harder next time.
- If you sell too many you'll sell out.
- You really want to be in a band and this is just a hobby.
- Rampant success would just be too much to cope with and you'd just have to self destruct.
- Quality is not judged by mere sales themselves.
- Your actually happy with you life as it is thank you and don't need extra hassle.
- You never get what you wish for :P
- None of the above ???

Trouble is my mind has been warped by years of capitalism, greed and debt that I'm having trouble seeing beyond the $ signs in my eyes.

Actually is it possible that because I feel the need to ask may mean that I'd never understand the answer anyway?

Okay, I'll bite.

Once you have it in your head that you want to sell a lot of records, you start to make artistic decisions. Bad artistic decisions. Like, "this is the part of the song where the audience will all sing along," or, "this is the line where every teenage girl will burst into tears." Fuck that.

Furthermore, I would rather sell 1000 records to friend of friends rather than 100000 records to a crowd of faceless dipshits.

There are more reasons, too, but in order to explain them, I would likely end up irrelevantly dissing a couple of major labels and shitting on perfectly good musicians making perfectly good music.
