I only heard it for the first time today.
I've kind of secretly been "only OK" with the remix I did. I was aiming for a sort of 'hanging out at the Pacific Mall' sort of vibe. Mr. Blueberry Boat said it sounded like I was auditioning to be Jon Brion's intern. Apt observation!
BUT THE REST OF THIS REMIX ALBUM IS THE BEST REMIX ALBUM I'VE EVER HEARD.
The Metric remix? Holy shit! It's blowing my mind!
The Stars remixers had a weirdly irreverential approach to the source material, like a bunch of hooligans ransacking a store. Instead of chemistry, you get drunken soccer baseball. It sounds like all those Little Darla compilations we listened to as teenagers.
There's been a lot of shit talked about remix albums. It's true, the remix albums of the last three years haven't always been entirely successful.
What are these things, remix albums? Not albums proper? Not necessarily dance-floor ready? But I love them! It's like getting together with your friends for a costume party!
Let's work on our remix album abilities together. I put forth this proposal: a moratorium on albums of new music. Only remix albums allowed. I'm going to spend the next five years only doing OMD reinterpretations. I'll going to record a bunch of Simon Bookish remixes. Hell, I'm going to remake "Zopilote Machine" doing my best impression of Nelson Riddle. Or, a remake of "Has A Good Home".

Also, every one of these bands on the Stars thing sounds like one of the old Darla staples. Metric = Mahogany. Junior Boys = Holiday Flyer. Most Serene Republic =... I don't know, Sisterhood Of Convoluted Thinkers?
This entire remix album is a couple of dirty words away from being a Momus record. Maybe, maybe not.
Either way, the whole lot of us should get together and record "A Tribute To Darla #12". Lots of gold there, if I remember properly. An awesome Louis Philippe song. That weird Japanese one-off Our Hour. That B-52s remix. My Morning Jacket covering Rocketman. The Montgolfier Brothers (best song ever). That funny song about "drinking absinthe from the till".
You know something? I heard Stars (and Memphis) for the first time on Darla compilations that I bought from Penguin Music in 1999/2000. These conincidences are too amazing to ignore.
So yeah. Stars have a good remix album. Stop making new records. Tribute to Darla #12.

Cool name! Sort of makes me think of some small goblin dude on the turntables, more than you or a dragon at the least.
I can't wait.. Finally, a time of non-crappy remixes has arrived. I'm getting tired of pop songs with extra dance beats mashed in.

I'm going to spend the next five years only doing OMD reinterpretations. Isn't that what you being doing the last 5 years No seriously just do a few albums worth and then get back to other stuff I'll going to record a bunch of Simon Bookish remixes. See now your thinking along the right lines Hell, I'm going to remake "Zopilote Machine" doing my best impression of Nelson Riddle. Now steady on there old chap.....perhaps just start with a go at Quetzalcoatl Eats Plums set to the theme of batman before we commit ourselves too much Or, a remake of "Has A Good Home". Never heard if it. is it any good? By the way, I have a remix alterego name: (Smaug). You like? You've really gollum done it now ;D Do we call you Smaug the Golden or Smaug the Magnificent? Actually I kind of like the whole remix idea, although it can produce much carp.

Jules, you need to break this bad hobbit of Lord of the Rings puns.
EDIT: Owen, if you stop making new music and start only playing covers, I will die a little inside. But the remix album is pretty fantastic.

I personally fell head over heels for the Kevin Drew remix of Celebration Guns. The original song was one of my favorites and the horse sounds and acoustic guitars really bring it home for me. But let's not forget the Jason Collett cover! And I do have to agree with you, this remix album sounds exactly what a remix album should sound like. The artists actually tore apart the songs to make them sound different instead of smacking on some sort of electro sounds and bass.
And if you do call yourself Smaug, I just implore that you cover up that missing spot of armor in your chest, just so no one sticks an arrow in the side of you.

oH! Oh!! A remix of HAGH by Simon Bookish, Grizzly Bear etc, etc... would be fantastically AWESOME!!!!! Why hasn't Bookish remixed any of your songs yet? This really should happen, yes?
As for Smaug, well.... I mean there's already Smog, right? even though it's spelled differently. Or you could always use Smaug: Online AKA Smog, whaddya think?

Owen, I've only heard your remix from the album, and if it is "only OK" then the rest must be beyond mind blowing. I guess I have to hear it now... And yeah, the remix ideas sound cool

I Sam sorry. It will Beorn a Thorin in your side until you Bombadil pickle, like you were supposed to. But be Merry! En-Durin this will help you find that box to keep the Sindar-in.

I love the remix album.. mostly. Young Galaxy completely ruined Calendar Girl. I actually can't sit through it.

I hate how 'remix' somehow became 'dance mix,' and no one really saw a difference. I was really impressed by the Stars remix album. I'm not totally in love with every track, but I thought the new directions were inventive. And I like the remixes by our Mr. Pallet, The Dears, Junior Boys, and Metric the best.
I'd be excited to hear what Owen would put out, given what we've heard with the Dazzle Ships covers and this Stars remix.
But please don't stop making original content. Please don't.
